Another towing question, limits for pre 1997 licenses

So if you got your license before 1997 you are limited to 8250kg.
But if you got your license after 1997 and then did the car+trailer test, you're limited to 7000kg.

Any yet in both cases your license shows as "B+E", i.e. you have the same categories, so why can one person go to 8250kg and the other to 7000kg if their licenses look the same and have the same categories on them?

the answer is fairly easy on this one the ones who can tow 8250 wear green underpants and the 7000 wear red
that is so when they take your pants down to slap your a***e they know how hard to do it.
Hope this has clarified even further, the, and lets face it VERY simple towing laws in this country.

simple really, pass before 97 and you can automaitically drive a 7500kg vehicle plus a 750kg trailer giving 8250kg. Pass after 97 then do b+e and you can drive a 'car' max weight 3500kg towing a trailer max 3500kg, giving a max of 7000kg......

Notice how I have stuff like C1E and D1E?

I haven't done extra tests (except cat A, motorcycle), I can drive a solo vehicle up to 7500kg, the wife can only drive up to 3500kg.

That's why the limits are higher.

But my post 1997 license IS the same as yours because I've topped up to BE. You have BE, I have BE. You can go to 8250kg, I can go to 7000kg.

What are the current laws on driving something heavier than 7.5tons on a car licence?
I knew a few people who drove converted coaches as motorhomes back in the 90s. And there used to be a get out enabling you to drive an artic as a mobile exhibition unit.
The thing is an HGV licence is just that - heavy goods. People used to be able to re register something privately.
Reason I ask is I fancy building an expedition motor home using a 4x4 or 6x6 lorry chassis - probably ex military.

I mot'd a 7.5 toner cargo that was being converted to a m/home a few mths ago bloke was driving that on a normal license ------I believe ...
but had been a mobile library and wast as such a hgv... again... I believe, also dont think it had ever had mot ??
it needed an mot according to dvla ??? so he could drive it to a weighbridge to classify it as class 4 and as long as we could fit it in it was ok to be done.

Licence requirements
The licence you need to drive a motorhome depends on your age and the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass (MAM). This is the vehicle’s weight plus the maximum load it can carry.

To drive a motorhome with a MAM of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you need a category C1 licence.

To drive a motorhome with a MAM of over 7.5 tonnes, you need a category C licence.

Check which vehicles you can drive and the licence and age requirements for towing.

Licence requirements may be different in Northern Ireland.

But a cat C licence is for a goods vehicle - there used to be a way or registering it as a car.

Trouble is still doesn't make things clear - everything refers to a goods vehicle which it clearly isn't! I notice the mobile exhibition thing still applies - so you can still drive an artic on a car licence!

I went to the Gov.uk website https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence entered my driver number and it tells me exactly what my entitlement is:

My friend with a pre-1997 license did the same and it also shows 7000kg (3500kg car + 3500kg trailer).

Not sure about PDG's explanation, if PDG has a C1E then I would have thought that allows him much more than 8250kg.

With the pre-97 licence you got C1 (up to 7500kg) and C1E (up to 7500kg plus trailer).

But, you also got code 107 in section 12, which is the code for maximum combined weight of 8250kg.

Get your friend to do it again, but check his C1E entitlement.


My BE covers exactly the same as yours.

Yup, exactly as you just said, I just found it online, screenshot below. So the 8250kg is from the C1E and a C1E obtained before 1997 has a restriction on it which appears as a code. A C1E obtained after 1997 gives you 12 tonnes combined.

A post-97 C1E (or pre-97 to get rid of code 107) is a separate test.
