I remember going past a site in Amsterdam every day where they were repairing a house by retrofitting piles....the originals would have been wood back in the day....as they rot the houses collapse .

Back in the 80's a mate was having a garage built on the side of his house and a kitchen across the back, to save costs he told the builder to mark out the footings and he would dig them. Over the weekend I helped him dig about 40 foot by a couple of feet deep by hand, on the Monday the builder said it was in the wrong place
My mate wasn't best pleased, neither was the builder as he had to move it at his own cost.

Footings and specifically piles don't just rely on sitting on solid ground but the friction on the side of the footings. I think a 450mm square hole equates to about 600mm diameter hole. Bit more complicated than my maths allows for but I know it's why square footing are preferred by engineers in many circumstances where round would be alot easier

That's why they are called friction piles I guess

Normally I only get to see them after they have been put in.

Tbh I haven't heard them referred to as friction piles before.

I have only heard them as replacement piles when the ground is augered out.
And displacement piles whe n something is driven or screwed into the ground.

That's the benefit of photos. On site BC can be a nightmare, especially if you get one that can't read drawings.

And there in lies the problem……someone experienced on site. Guy who was allocated to us, nice enough, but think we were a bit far from his home office work location, so asked loads of daft questions and wanted more and more pictures….saved him getting his slippers out from under the desk. Was dreading the final sign off….fortunately he was on holiday….his boss came, like night and day, with some common sense too.

Not really, I'm mechanically minded, a plumber and it's my build on my property so it gets done right! The company provide technical support if needed but the instructions are really simple to follow. I was going going to build/frame it myself as I've done a few loft conversions with a developer,but yellow tape killed that idea.

Interesting build, I've not seen that before! Will the walls be some sort of cladded frame or can solid masonry be used? 5 bulk bags of ballast for six 18" holes is some big chunks of concrete! Last job had two 5' pads 18" deep installed over the existing foundation to take some steel uprights, I ended up using 3 bags and thought they looked decent sized lumps!!

Exactly. Already had a discussion about cavity closers, he wanted the rear wall rebuilt with them fitted...I asked him how and got a funny look! Spoke to the man In charge and was told to treat the wall with an approved water repellent.

The walls will be a version of a sip. Highly insulated relatively lightweight!!(I hope) and easy to assemble as is the roof structure...
The walls will be cladded, the roof will use a tapco style slate
Your not wrong. I reckoned on 2 bags at @450 for the 6 with a but left. Unfortunately the holes grew(a lot) due to all the crap that had been buried. I ended up moving 2 x 8 ton skips of clay etc out of the holes and lowering ground level.

What size can you go upto with the system. It's definitely a very interesting system.

I don't know, the foundation/flooring system is made by a company called durabase. There website shows some pretty big extensions.
The rest of it is manufactured by warmer roof....if you want details I can give you my contacts number so you can have a chat...he's really helpful and nothing was too much trouble

Looks good, but I'd end up shovelling everything twice as it would have to be put in a barrow then the mixer.

You put the output nozzle over the hole, and toss the bags in.
No wheelbarrow needed.
The beeg wheels are so you can move it around the job site, and the rotation
feature helps get the output over the hole.

we generally dont use premix bags here.

we use 1 ton dumpy bags or entire truck loads of separate materials which have to be shovelled into the mixer in the right quantity's. much more cost effective.

We are looking to move but so it's just idle curiosity as to how easily and cheaply an extension could potentially be added.
I think traditional techniques would come in double

Unfortunately in the UK, its 1 ton bags at the front of the house, shovel, barrow and shovel again or chuck it in the mixer and barrow it round....oh to live in the US
