Aligning a tailstock

Thanks, but I'm still mad at myself.

I finished turning some screws last week, drilled and tapped a jig for them so I could cut the slot in the head. This week, I couln't find the jig or one of the screw blanks.

I found them both, I'd screwed the blank into the jig. I didn't realise this until I'd made a new jig by re-using the original jig that I couldn't find. I faced it off, centre drilled, drilled and tapped then the screw had fell off.

Stick a dti on the chuck face
Cock 12 then 6 adjust to be in the middle
Clock in 3 and 9 adjust

You are now aligned

Gotta be very careful doing that because the stem of the DTI mount will bend down under self-weight.

Certainly can indeed but a stern dti base is worth owning even though they are a faff to set up

Just to update this. I reckon it's down more to operator being stupid than severe wear in the Myford.

Having sorted the East > West horizontal alignment, I applied logic to things and, having started again from scratch with a fresh work piece I noticed that when facing off there was a very small [i.e. tiny] 'pip' left, which would be enough to divert a small drill at the start of operations. Adjusted the height of the cutting tool to spot on centre height, and that seems to have sorted things .

EDIT: note to self - use a centre drill in future, stupid!!

I usually use a file just in case.
Just finished shimming my Colchester tail stock. Tricky because of the V way in the base. Anyway all sorted now. Was 12 thou too low. Now it is spot on. Very happy!

On a working machining I always turn a boss to quill dimensions then clock in.
But this only works if you clock top first and adjust or clock both sides to equal distance

CoAx is a good choice for that. Bought one for aligning the VDI turret I made for my lathe. A friend borrowed it, he still has it In fairness I said I wasn't in a hurry for it back
