There is nothing stopping any competent person maintaining their own truck and doing their own periodic maintenance, the only stumbling block is the brake test and print out to verify braking efficiency. This could be booked at any decent commercial garage or you could buy a Bowmonk. Sorry to go off topic. but are you quite sure you added enough safety factor into that design?

It was built to hang 10 tons over 70 peoples head ,, in 40mph winds ,, and i did get some steel given , so I used it low down , 12:1 used as a base guide same as people lifting equipment ,,, it was also built to be grounded out in a muddy field and sit flat , be ok to do a week long festival sitting like that , and then be towed out with a dozer ,,, but yea it was tough lol ,,, 13 years of doing just that and never an issue with it al all , , I had 18 tons gross to play with , so no point in wasting it lol

As I passed a driving test in the 60s I had C1 (7.5Ton) entitlement on my licence but as soon as I reached 70 it was taken off. Requires medical etc to have it put back on. Anyone passing a test after 1996 (?) doesn't have it, 3.5 t only, separate test required for C1. Chap next door was driving his lads 4+ ton motorhome without realising he had lost the C1 entitlement when he had reached 70.

The whole system is a mess and far too complicated.
You can still legally drive an articulated lorry on a car licence - if you register it as mobile exhibition unit.
7.5 tonners are dying out commercially. They will only carry about 2.8 tons legally. For the same size and hassle you can get a 12 tonner which carries far more.
It is all a crying shame. You used to be able to run nice big vans with a 7.5 ton limit.
I have borrowed a 7.5 tonner several times when I have needed it - personal use only.
Once I discovered they had given me the wrong lorry - 18 tonner

You can also re register a lorry from 12 tons down to 7.5 - limits the carrying capacity of course but useful if you want a good strong HIAB - the ones fitted to 12 tonners are a lot stronger.

You could register it as a camper - then take the body off

Mercedes used to make the Vario, great van and converted to all sorts of uses, various weights up to and including 7.5t. stopped making them, I believe due to the downturn in the market for them. I might be wrong but I think Iveco are the only people still making a 7.5t van.

Of course all the legislation leads to is people chancing it in sprinters et all 3.5t vans running round very overweight.

Passed my test after the millenium so just a milk float licence without taking umpteen other tests, can be a pain in the posteria at times.

Seems the offspring will have to spring for that as a triennial birthday present as it's usually for their benefit I need to exercise these rights!

Given the 'clinics' seem to take place in hotel conference rooms, seems like a box-ticking conveyor belt to get your C1 entitlement renewed.

Edit: just realised with a slightly horrified thought - SWMBO could be handed the keys to 7.5 tonner and a 3.5 tonne trailer as well????

Ive towed an artic complete with its 45 ft fridge behind a recovery lorry ,, but only into a yard to drop it off ,, and no dreams of ever going backwards , I dont even like twin bogey trailers ,, some folk seem to just have the knack , Im like a Jet pilot ,,, forwards is the direction I look , and thats the way I go.

A lot of boat trailers are done with a front dolly ,,, I dont even like putting them down the slip when i have them hooked on the front of the tractor and can actually watch whats going on right infront of my eyes ,, let alone behind something and having to look in mirrors .

I think a road train would be easier to reverse as the push point pivots like a normal artic unlike a dolly that's opposite.....I think.

It's easier in a tractor than a lorry as you can look out the back window and see the dolly
And same with 2 grain trailers on
But must be atleast 2 years since I've towed one

The big issue Merc had with the Vario, was it had never been type approved. It was a model that just lumbered on with just whatever needed changed to meet the latest emissions standard, however to meet Euro 6, it would have needed to have been fully type approved, and Merc decided there just wasn't a big enough market to justify the required changes, especially when they could sell a 6tonne Sprinter that could carry as much weight.
You can still get a 7.5t Daily van, however they're not common.

Hi, When I did my class 1 training the other lad doing it was a farmers son. His dad used to drive a tractor and dolly trailer up between two sheds, get it all out of line and told him to reverse it out, after a bit of practice he got it and declared he knew how to reverse an artic. When it came to it he used to get in a right old pickle as it was a different technique.
