2K Safety - Leason learnt

i did my first bit of painting last week in my garage door ajar using 2k clear. didnt use a mask or anything as wasnt told the dangers. least i know now.

i would have thought u would use a mask for spraying whatever the paint

im of the old school builders where masks are never thaught of. so i always end up saying i should really get a mask whilst half way thru a job. ill never make it to 27.. altho i have recently baught a mask i shall be making use of this week now.

You should use the correct mask for whatever paint your using, The only good thing to breathe is air !!!

hmmm right lookslike I need to get an air fed mask. Anyone know what the minimum specs are for them as Ive only got one compressor with 2 outlets one regulate one not and its only 24ltrs at 9.5cfm.

Think i can just attch the airfed mask to the unregulated side and install an extra regulator?

If you look at the specs most want about 6-7cfm delivered on their own. Plus you want it to have a clean air supply so not hoovering up paint mist etc.

I wish to thank the mods for making this a sticky and i'm pleased to hear that a lot of you guys are going to play it safe.
I now have to take 3 types of inhalers all the time now because of my stupidity, i've now got cronic obstructive pulmary decease in short my lungs are knackered.
So play safe guys.

I Dont know if it is totaly to blame but before I the accident with 2K I was in good health I have been trying to find answars on how it can cause so much damage but cant get a straight answar from the doctors.

I think the HSE stats show that paint sprayers are 80 times more likely to suffer asthma than the general population.

It is the isocyanates in the hardener that cause the problems as they sensitise the respiratory system which can result in an asthma attack. Normally once this has happened any future exposure to these or similar substances can cause an attack to occur.

The only way to check that your PPE/RPE is doing a good job in protecting you is to have biological screening. This consists of supplying a sample of your urine very shortly after spraying. This sample is sent to a laboratory where they will determine what type of isocyanate and the level of your exposure to it.

It does need to be done shortly after exposure (usually less than 4 hrs) as the body metabolises the isocyanate quite quickly and once you have been for a "leak" the trace markers from your exposure will have gone but any harm will still remain.

Im a coachworks apprentice and you need to be very aware of the dangers!
isocyonate can be a killer and even if you can get to hospital in time its quite rare that they can do anything!
i do quite a bit of bodywork and paintjobs for people and from word of mouth at my house and i only have a mask similar to this

and i make sure to take regular breaks and cover up if i spray 2k
but i much prefer using a full airfed mask such as the devilbiss one

while doing some reasearch on my new full face mask i came across this

Worth remebering that this is from recearch to Swedish standards so might be at odds with the HSE. one thing that occured to me (while sand blasting) is if my van is covered in dust at 40M and i only have 15M of air line a airfed mask would be supplying dirty air to the mask. I know there is filtering but i trust Sundstrom more than Machine Mart/ Ebay kit!

I Know it's an older thread, but I have had to deal with Isocyanates and the HSE in a working environment.

Regardless what the Swedes think, our UK legislation does not recognise anything based on filtration alone as safe for use with Isocyanates. Only Full face, air-fed (and correct quality air standard - clean, free from moisture and oils and filtered) is acceptable, and then the spraybooths must be checked for clearance times, to ensure that when you take off the mask, there's no chance of the invisible, odourless particles left in the atmosphere.

I didn't go through all the pages, so apologies that it may be re-said, but I felt the last post was too dangerous to be left un-responded.

I've a similar background to Waz and as the Sundstrom pdf says their filters will give you a level of protection from isocyanates (and other organic compounds) but the problem is stated by them in that you cannot detect, by sense of smell, isocyanate vapours. That is likely to lead to users continuing to use their respirators long after the protection has stopped unless they replace them within the recommended timescales, so far safer to use an air fed respirator as being positive pressure you don't run the risk of ingress around the seal of a respirator.
HSE research states that the main risk from isocyanates is during spraying so applying Tigerseal shouldn't be a problem as long as you have good levels of ventilation.

it perfectly safe to use as there are no air bourne particles you can inhale

Cheap 2 pack mask

Hi, Very new to painting 2k, and thought of a way to set up a cheap 'positive pressure mask'. Can anyone advise me it this wouldnt work? I only have to respray a car in a large shed - and it's a once off. I have purchased 30 metres of 6mm clear tube, to one end, I have cable tied to a bicycle helmet, the other end goes to a 2hp air compressor that I will place outside, away from any spraying. The helmet is fitted, and a plastic bag is placed over my head, with the valve of the air compressor turned ON!. The bag goes over my head, the positive compressed fresh air pressurizes the bag, and inflates. the bag is tucked into my disposable painting suit for the job. Can anyone see if there would be a problem with this? I've attached some photos. Even the whole kit can be stored in the bag!

Apart from the general dodginess of relying on a plastic bag in the face of potentially lethal fumes... you should filter the incoming air. Proper setup uses triple-filter packs and activated carbon mask filters.
