Well again, huge thanks people.

Spent an hour changing the air filter and crank case breather filter, and the difference is day and night, drove out the drive, accelerated, a puff of black smoke, then no more. Its completely cured its heavy smoking.

And, it accelerates, it was really slow and sluggish, it's no racing car, but it's loads better, I've a whistling turbo noise to investigate, and a nasty shake at 40 mph.

The early freelander body was made by an outside contractor IIRC? Maybe that's why they seem not to rust too badly, there seem to be a lot still running around hereabouts.
I really fancied a facelifted v6 at one time, with a Rover/MGZT gearbox and fwd only. Anyway, never happened, and the cost of road tax is putting me off, when the Jag xf bites the dust I will be going back to a 2litre petrol turbo I think.

The bodies were nearly made by Valmet, but BMW took over and re-vamped the old SD1 lines to build them so pretty much built in house apart from the plastic front wings that were made in France.

Changed the gearbox oil for the correct grade today, wasn't expecting any noticeable difference, but it now shifts gears much more smoothly, ordered new pipe on the air system, which was leaking and a diesel filter.

Oil change next, then the above.

Might be worth, at this age, changing the fuel pump + filter if it hasn’t been done recently. It’s in front of the back right wheel.

If it fails, you can sometimes give it a boot to start it again and get you home.

Not too bad a job - I used to take the wheel off for access. Everything’s held in a tray, and it’s easier to unclip the pipes/connectors and take the whole tray to the bench to change everything.

Get an OEM Pierburg pump and decent filter - aftermarket versions are gash.

Well, I've ordered the filter, a Mapco one, I had a climb under the vehicle, it's a long cylinder type thing, as you said under the back, next to a wheelarch.

I thought you’d found another FL1. When the wife was driving one, I bought a scrap one for £100 for spares. So handy to pick parts from.

One day, we were heading to catch a flight and a coolant pipe burst. Wife in a flap. Over to the parts car, hoicked out the pipe, fitted and bled, and we were on our way. There is no emoji for the smugness I felt

So the MOT was a bit boff, emissions failed, but I think that's the blowing pipe I'd fixed with tape, front suspension, needs some bits and bobs, fog lights not working, but most of all the propshaft from front to back is a huge fail, and currently seeming a bit of a headache to source.

MOT man was like, there's no way that should have passed an MOT last year.

Ours used to pass every year with no props/VCU - I used to take them off for the summer.

Finding one is one thing, but then you’re into stiff VCU territory. Drive around like that for long and you’ll blow the rear diff or IRD.

They can be refurbished by Bell engineering, but not cheap. I had two done. One was ok, the other locked up solid eventually. Sent it back, and they said it was the needle roller bearings, which were not routinely replaced during the refurb. I wasn’t very impressed, given that the thing needs to be cut open to service it.

If you find one, could you fit it for the MoT, then take it off? Not strictly kosher, I know, but they drive very nicely in FWD.

Plenty of DIY VCU refurb info on LandyZone. If you have decent lathe, you’re well ahead of the game.

God, yes please, if it's a freelancer 1 2.0 diesel, with an autobox, that would be a miracle, much appreciated.
