at the moment its got sticking swirl flaps / gunge in the inlet manifold (as its idle is kack..quick blip and it sounds better...
Timing belt is getting done next year so i'll get the manifold off then and get it cleaned up

Does ya brain in sometimes...and it can just be a case of eliminations that's time consuming and expensive. ..are them swirl flaps in the inlet manifold. ...

Normal 'wear & tear' aside, the biggest problem was battery drain-down. Eventually traced to a failed Dynamic Drive [it's their clever active anti-roll bar system, brilliant when working :rolleyes:

] control module - the part alone was c. £550, plus the diagnostics and fitting. :vsad:

And of course, it's only available from BMW....... :whistle:

, couldn't source a 2nd-user one.

With it working , no big comfy saloon should handle like a sportscar........

And you no it just has to be a main dealer part that's totally extortionate price..but then that's the nature of bmw..mercedes.i still got this wabasto heater to suss out yet....

I have read about them .bmw installed them on 2000 onwards 5 series. I no you can upgrade them but I think they still suffer from the symptoms. .in some causing complete engine failure. ...can you have them removed or is it a case of remove one thing and a host of stuff...a good clean out would help as carbon deposits get right stuck in to thinks like that...

If its anything like the intake on my non common rail diesel...it will be horrific (I used a thin scraper and a lot of degreaser to get that clean...some of it was like hardened boot polish rather than oil or grease...)

The Z19DTH has a an aftermarket modded manifold problem is...to get the manifold off, means taking off the timing belt, diesel pump and a few other bits...

Other option is to clean the manifold (by doing the above) and if the caps attached to the flaps break, replace them with a brass upgrade part that seemingly solves the issue of them breaking

Also I'm going to re route the crankcase breather (OEM it flows from the crankcase through a useless catch can, across the head and down into the air intake pre turbo, clogging the turbo and the intake manifold (particularly the intake as the oil turns to sticky grease...)

Plan is a vented catchcan (as you can vent to atmosphere but its frowned on...) needs vented as otherwise your stopping the crankcase from releasing excess pressure and can blow seals

I no what you mean..I had similar with the crud egr valve. .but what I used was bitumen cleaner...it does break it down and does a good job...can send you a picture tomorrow of the stuff that might help cleaning it easier. ....sounds like a better way to venture it..it used a similar set up on my Mercedes 300 do. .it used a pipercross crank breather/filter....it takes vents to atmosphere but is very minimum. .

Out of interest chaps. .anyone got a good method of removing these little press clips..they ain't to bad to get off when they are bigger..but these are small and the plastic there attached to ain't very strong..I need to replace the little convoluted hoses...

That looks good value might have a go at that set myself even though I have most of the bits separately the fuel hose separator pliers in the middle I use very often, for getting the hose off on vw fuel filters and the likes etc

Morning all. ...a good start to a Monday. ..a long walk to get new pump....that I will pick up at 12 clock as didn't have one on shelf...a longer walk down to get new hoses from hose shop....a nightmare. ...didn't have anything similar to the pump hoses..managed to get some rubber diesel hose that would sort of do...asked about the hose spec..didn't have a clue.ffs!!!!so far doing well

It looks like you're past all that now, but I've just read through and will share what I learnt about the e46 320d I have.

Swirl flaps -remove and fit blanking plates. Not worth the risk of failure.
EGR valve - regularly check and clean. Or blank off. Lets all manner of soot and gunk into the inlet manifold.
Engine breather - make sure it has a "vortex" style one instead of the filter sock. The socks gum up unless regularly changed. Vortex filter will allow a bit more oil through the turbo though so venting to a catch can would probably be even better but I'd want to keep the crankcase negatively pressurised as standard though.
Everyone bangs on about remaps and I'm keen to try but too stingy at the moment

I mean, the OG method is to tap in to the inlet, pre-turbo so as to put some -ve pressure on the crankcase. Whatever oil separation device you choose, it'd be sensible to replicate this. The pipework may not breathe efficiently enough to just vent to atmosphere.

Well..good news is....installed the new pump and hoses....ran it up...all OK for half hour....no air in system. ...then all of a sudden. .it's starts hunting and injectors rattle and stalls...so my mate came round with his snap on code reader..and it's saying no presume at fuel rail....everything else is working. .so I think it's no down to a dud main diesel pump on the side of engine....happy days

Does it have the lift pump under the floor, below passenger front seat? If so, try giving it a tap or two to see if it comes to life.

That sounds expensive. We had a tractor that started pulling air through a cracked widget in the tank. It damaged the pump too

having said that though, it would be odd for you to have fixed the air leak, it run fine and then the pump fail.... Hopefully could be something else??

I have replaced it about a week ago..the pump in boot I did today..had it running fine..took it for a spin up the road for half hour.all fine...got in it half hour later.started first flick of key.started hunting then injector rattles and stops dead....friends code reader states fuel rail preasure....the only thing left in the main preasure pump on engine as it has the rail preasure valve built in the back of it....

Had it running fine for a good half hour...never missed a beat..then dies...
