the gas valve would click on and off without the thermocouple working but wouldn't let the gas through

If the fan is cycling every few seconds then it's almost certainly the switch. It's not even getting to the ignition phase which precedes the opening of the gas valve.
The fan operating signal will need to be steady for a few seconds before the ignition cycle starts. If ignition fails the fan remains running and the ignition sequence is retried a number of times before lockout.

yeah he dosnt like the clock if it works leave it alone if its worked before with no issues not worthwhile to touch it as long as yo could forward it or even set it for heating some people dont like that model of clock
your already past the thermacouple stage
most of it can be tested via a 240v electric screwdriver

I think he has said those are not working, which they wouldnt if the thermocouple was at fault or any other fault limiting the operation ?
But saying something is not working, is NOT saying it is faulty, it is saying it is not working at the moment.
A bit like saying your car engine is faulty coz the battery is flat, yes it is faulty coz it doesnt run BUT putting a charged battery on it simply 'FIXES' the engine fault.

id be looking more at pressure switch and fan speed not being fast enough one or the other would cause the boiler not to fire up if the pressure is not equal to its lighting settings via the ignition
your looking for voltage of 240v an electric screwdriver can test these pins
as the fan is starting up by spinning is the voltage correct at pin 7 then at pin 6 and then pin 5
to test air pressure switch you need to test terminal n/o

why would u want heating on without hot water.greedy man
because I can boil a kettle of water for washing up rather than heating up a water cylinder

Very very grey area
If you disturb a case seal or a gas carrying component then you can't, but is touching a safety device any better?
I try not get involved in the legalities as it causes an argument.
The big boilers we fit (50kw+) won't sell you any spares at all if you don't have gas safe

If your boiler is the same as a Potterton Profile it's the same as mine.
I had the exact same fault with the fan cutting in for a few seconds then stopping,
No click from the gas valve and no ignition.
I was sure it was the pressure switch as well but I happened to tap the pcb while it was trying to start and it fired up straight away!
It was the pcb with a dry joint somewhere, I couldn't find it so got a recon pcb for £35 from a place in Watford.
It works perfectly now.

Another boiler bloke came today, with the idea of getting 3 quotes he also said it's knackered... then said he ain't giving a quone if we want a quote it's 45 quid? strange that, if I charged 45 quid to quote every gate or railing job I wouldn't actually have to make anything, just live off the quote money

I personally have no problem when a customer says they are getting 3 quotes, if theyre spending a few grand of their hard earned its understandable that they want a few options. I sometimes get told I was the most expensive person but they chose me because they felt most at ease with me and felt I'd do the best job.if people tell me they have 3 quotes I put the phone down on them
I had one chap who told me to be at his house 3pm prompt...he rolled up at 3.15 just as I was about to drive off. I got out and discussed his job and he mentioned I was the 11th wrought iron bloke he'd had out to quote....now THAT is taking the mick and I let him know it big time.
