Land Rover Defender 110 Rebuild

I did consider getting an old one dipped and stripped and then zinc'd. By the time I had driven up and down the M6 and dropped it off for Zincing I was £50 off a new one.
Not inc any welding that might need doing. Even with a new one it would still need stripping.

I took the view that the old one has lasted since 1999 so the new one with plenty of paint and me filling the cavities with Dinitrol should help preserve for a few years yet.

Just for comparison, mine cost £75 to blast, and £180 to dip (both inc tax)

The dip was about 3x weight cost, as swg charge a large premium for landrover parts, and it still took them 2x to get it right.

I thought new ones were about £1k ish now? If you have a cheap source, I would be interested to know (even though I don't need another, but I'm.still curious!)

PS. I'm.not mentions numbers to conflict with your decision, just as an indication, in case you thought dipping would cost more.

I was going to go to somewhere like SPL in Brum. (removed paint and all rust, filler etc and leaves with bare metal) So I can inside done as well)

News ones are over £1k mark. Mine was not cheap - a new LR one from a dealer.

I think I was quoted around the £60-80 mark for Zincing.

I would kill for my own warehouse... Ugh. Land and property in this country is so overpriced. Your friend is very fortunate - what do they do?

It's looking great Kim. I can't wait to see the finished product! Makes me want to work on mine... except I drove 6 hours yesterday to get to my car and within 5 minutes discovered that a major component was missing and it will be weeks before I can get a replacement.

I might go and weld some stuff today at long last...

Hey everyone,

I know it's been an eternity since I've posted. Been so busy as I'm sure you've seen by my new job post. Anyway, about two weeks ago I got my galvanising back it needs finishing, it also then needs painting after I T wash it. I was going to attempt to T wash and paint some today but right now the weather is so bad and the temperature may mean it won't dry without a special hardener so I think I'll order that and try again next week with it. I'll see if my friend can come help me though.

I'm very happy, my only concern is cleaning the threads out. I don't want to damage them but I think it's going to be very tricky.

I was hoping to make a move last weekend and earlier this one but I'm having to be a bit careful. I've done my knee in again. We'll see what needs to happen after an MRI but until then I just have to take it slow.
If I do any today. Like always I'll get some pics up later.

Grind points on a few bolts to run down the threads it helps to get them started. Nice to see some progress again.

Get a new 2nd tap, fresh cutting fluid.
Drill a straight hole in some hard wood, that will keep the tap true.
Then take your time and it will be ok.

That's a useful tip if you've a pillar drill available to get it spot on

I re-tapped the threads in my bulkhead last week - just drilled out the zinc, which was easy enough, and re-tapped.

The threads in the bulkhead are not exactly structural. The tap followed the remains of the old thread, so was pulled true by that.

East Anglian Galvanising did it. I had it shot blasted and it was about £120 for all of it to be done

That's part of the 'wedge' group also - can i ask you how they worked out the price - was it just on weight, or weight + number of items, or...?

Did they know what the parts were, or were they just 'metal' to them?

I just called them, told them I had a load of Land Rover parts. Then my friend took them for me. They charge under a pound a kg. this weight is measured after they've galvanised it all. Not before. 80p or something a kg I think it was.

I'm surprised that galvanisers don't charge by weight difference - ie final weight less original weight. That way an accurate measurement of zinc used could be applied to pricing, and if they've filled your chassis rails solid they'd recoup the cost.

Just go easy and start with a first taper tap if practical to do so for a first cut

They did that at those rates it'd cost next to nothing. How they do it means they only need to weigh it once.

kim, who is your goto supplier for parts? i ask as i have just purchased a series 2/3 hybrid and need to start shopping. i normally use a combination of paddocks, craddocks and eblag. just wondered if you had a different preferred supplier...
