we put a motorised Binzel robot torch onto a Kemppi power source, took ages to set up. Which reminds me, the installation was plagued with problems, at one point it almost came to fisticuffs between my boss and one of the Kemppi managers

Is there a setup for 1050 wire in the S3, I'm using the 4043 wire at the moment for 1050 sheet ali, we just weld up corners.

AlMg 5%
99.5% Al
AlMg 4.5 Mn

1050 is 99.5% Al, as are 1350, 1450 etc. With the 1xxx series the last two numbers denote purity beyond 99% while the second digit describes modifications to the origional alloy (specific impurities in this case)

I've now had a little play with 1.2mm 1050 wire in my Kemppi, I also have the right programme for it now
I haven't got it dialled in yet, but I'm quite happy with the first 10mins of experimentation on 2mm 1050 sheet, no birds nesting and only lost one tip
Just concentrate on fillet, don't let let your eyes divert away from that or you'll be avin nightmares

TBH I wasn't taking this too seriously, I just wanted to test the welder and the wire, I think the soot was due to torch angle or not being close enough, both pilot error.
If all works out well I'l stick with 1050, which begs the question, why is 4043 commonly used, does it just flow a little better?

I use 5356 but that is because nearly all my Alu is 5083 (or 6082 if sections)
I always get a bit of soot but that is inherent with the magnesium alloys I think. Funny thing was, because of a topic on this forum, I found that 6082 Alu with 5356 wire produces a lot more soot than 5083 Alu with 5356 wire.
I also found a roll of wire that had been given to me years ago, it is a high Si content and there was no soot at all when I used it, even on 6082. Don't know the equivalent grade of it as it was marked AL-G21 but I was surprised how much slower I needed the wire feed when compared to 5356.
Is it a pulsed Mig you have?

Yes single & double, this weld was on double.
I make sign trays and we just weld up the corners and grind off, so pretty welding is not necessary

Hello, sorry to drag up an old thread, but it seemed relevant since you were all talking about 1050 wire...
we have been replacing our ANCIENT ESAB step mig with push pull gun, it was beyond economical repair. But one thing this used to do was run 1050 aluminium for our ducting and fans - we use pure aluminium for it's resistance against acid gas in our process plant.
So a lincoln speedtec 405 was purchased, even without pulse it runs Mg and Si alum really nicely, BUT it can't feed 1050 wire to save its life. With the best and most sympathetic setup possible on a 3m gun, it birdsnests every 2 runs, whether cold or hot.
So we bought a Binzel push-pull on the advice of LWS, they fitted it with a specific lincoln power connection, sync'd up etc... but it's an 8m gun (standard) and it doesn't have the power to pull the wire properly. So it ends up pushing more than pulling... and birdsnest city. (it's a PP36 and they have finally admitted it's not fit for the job)
We need a powerful 4m push pull gun, but the LWS is struggling to find once since all the major manufacturers make 8m ones as standard. They called Lincoln UK and they weren't interested.
for info, we are running 1050 1.2mm wire at around 240amps and 26volts on some large fillets stepping between 20mm hubs and 10mm blades. It's probably on the limit of a Binzel 36 aircooled gun, but the duty cycle is quite low. (it never runs for long enough before it mis-feeds!)
Does anyone have any experience of running this wire like this? I'm at my wit's end, the fab guys are refusing to do the job because it's such a soul destroying job of clearing a birdsnest every 2 minutes.
I've been given the go-ahead to buy a new welding package outright, been talking to a WS about Lorch Saprom but I'm wondering if they'll manage to source me a 4m push-pull gun...?
Of course, this time, we won't be putting money down til we've proven the package works for our application.
