How would you repair this?

It's the brake mount on my trials bike, both holes should be threaded but I stripped one. It needs to be tapped M4 (Maybe M5, I forget which). Oh, and it's aluminium.

Retap bigger size, or thread insert.

2, use bigger fixing
3, cut it off and weld on a new one,

option one is favorite,

Helicoil both of them, because it won't be long before the other will want doing.

Just for the record my post of a nut was intended for inside the square holed sections...thought they were hollow and i never meant right "through" the tube

Those Heli-coils are not to bad, the tools are what you expect. The insert and tap are not as bad as they can me.

Helicoil would be my choice. If you've never used them before, follow the instructions and perhaps have a test run on something first. Once its in there, if its not right, next step is cut it off and weld on a new bit really.

I knew someone would comment on that. The spring rusted and snapped but it's still a good tape. It's not invisible though, you can see it in the corner, a tie wrap is all you need.

We have an old guy come in now and then with bits of tapemeasure cut into sections he uses as high visiility steel rules

My method would be to tap it out to the next size and use a stud with an m6 on one end and m5 on other (or whatever combination makes sense when you know what the original hole is). Mostly because it wouldn't mean buying anything and waiting for it to arrive. Then use nuts on the top of the studs through the thing you're bolting on. It looks like there's plenty of spare boss there to take the next size.

Edit; if you were feeling lazy I bet you'd get away with cleaning out the threads and if it's not tapped down as far as the tube, doing so. Then wind in as much stud as will go in, with loctite. Chances are there will be some undamaged threads below for it to cling on to.

Best not, you might find out I'm not really a 17 year old with a dead tape measure and I have in fact been lying to you all for years.
