How would you repair this?

My method would be to tap it out to the next size and use a stud with an m6 on one end and m5 on other (or whatever combination makes sense when you know what the original hole is). Mostly because it wouldn't mean buying anything and waiting for it to arrive. Then use nuts on the top of the studs through the thing you're bolting on. It looks like there's plenty of spare boss there to take the next size.

That's quite tempting, it would be much easier to assemble with studs sicking out the frame rather than getting all 4 pieces lined up and dropping bolts through.

It wouldn't work, the thread pulled out all at once leaving a small aluminium spring wrapped around the bolt, it's a smooth 5mm hole all the way down.

Ah, fair enough. Often the way with ali vs steel. What a coincidence though, it's been pre clearance drilled to be tapped m6.

Cable tie the caliper on, it works a treat on the tape measure! With the Helicoil kit do a trial on a piece of scrap before doing the bike, some of the kits have coil fitting tools that bind in the helicoil.

The plan was to get it working and sell it, but now it's mostly back together I remember how fun they are so I may keep it.
If I ever do sell it I'll probably put the money towards a 26" one anyway.

I knew someone would comment on that. The spring rusted and snapped but it's still a good tape. It's not invisible though, you can see it in the corner, a tie wrap is all you need.


I did watch him, until he started machining veg.

You most likely will have to drill the frame anyway, with the lead on the tap it probably wont cut enough threads to fit the insert before it bottoms out, just be careful not to wobble the drill and enlarge, or oval the hole in the block.

Worst case, and I don't normally advocate monkeying tools, get the thread started then grind the first few turns off (i.e. cut the tap short) so you're working further up the tap and it'll go upto the blind end. Of course the tap's then FUBAR for future jobs but if the frame's important somehow...

Best not, you might find out I'm not really a 17 year old with a dead tape measure and I have in fact been lying to you all for years.

dont drill through bottom arm it will weaken it and will start to fracture overtime
over sizes tap as mention and use thread lock and torqe to 11 nm you dont need to go made with it its only ally job done barry get back on them fields

I've never tried tapping epoxy, I'd imagine it would only work if I drill it out much bigger.
