Have you removed the zinc (or what the silver thing is..) from the nut before welding?
I made a mess on my first nut.

No i thought you only removed the silver because the fumes are bad for you. I had my respirator on and my extractor as close to the nut as i could get it.

You need to get a decent bit off - probably 1 or 2mm of depth, then they're pretty easy to solder up. That said, if it's a big nut and thin steel it can get tricky trying to get enough heat into the nut without burning through the plate.

Thanks skotl they are on solid enough (not pretty though) plus i'm putting a bolt on the bottom to tighten the feet up.

Thinking about the counter top now. Whats the best way to secure it down? This is what i did on the printer table

Tack weld would be easiest.

Or use your new-found expertise at welding nuts, and fit captive nuts into the cross beams, and bolt the table top down onto them?

if your fastening normal worktop to it its screwed from underneath just get someone to sit on while your screwing them up

if your using a metal top just weld it up from underneath id choose

I was planning to put a wooden top on this. I am going to make a welding bench but not sure cupboards underneath is a good idea.

if your putting a laminate worktop on it just screw it tight from underneath any edges please seal them up good as water or damp will just rot them either use the iron on stuff or seal with silicone

Thanks guys i will cut some little tabs, drill and weld them to the frame.

What about adding a piece of plate to the corner where my vice will go? Pending its purchase, the one i have now is rubbish.

Managed to get the feet on today .

looks great here just one thing wait till you get some weight in the cupboard/draws then you will know how hard it is to kick in the wheels to lift off the floor as you may just find that they either bend or will not engauge due to the weight of the unit and equipment that you have stored in them

Thanks Gaz it sort of worked with the cupboard and fobco drill on top. We will see what happens when i get it loaded with tools . I've enjoyed making this. Worse case scenario i have to cut the lift mechanism off and mount the wheels to the frame.

Added the tabs to hold the counter top down. And a little bit of plate where the vice might go (i know its small its all i had .

The lift mechanism works without the foot pedal but with the foot pedal it does not give it enough range if the floor is uneven. I'm thinking about removing the pedal and adding some threaded bar with a nut welded to the end and using that to lift it.

for my advice id add another bit of box section and also another plate below the other plate as gives much better torq when you fasten that vice on also it wont move much even if you changed the top at a later date

Not done much with this lately, the foot pedal is working out a pita.

Did manage to make a few stickers to slap on the things i've made.

Managed to get a few hours in the garage today .

Made some adjustments to the lift mechanism and started painting. Only another two benches to go .

This looks like a very nice job, You say you are thinking about , the top ,the base , castors etc, have you been using the right lubricant? It is readily available world wide , I believe it is known as San Miguel ,cerveza, etc in Spain, several litres are usually required for a project of this size.
Seriously though, nice job.

Nah. Bolt regular castors to a hinged plate and push to the floor with a bolt.

Have you got any links to images ?? I once looked at a saw bench that used a cheap scissor jack to raise and lower the feet it was ingenious but I can't find it now I need to look at it again....
