Saab used the Ford Taunus engine, made in Germany, I did rebuild one of their earlier own engines a couple of years ago

I had a 95. Gearbox locked up solid - at speed . Managed to get a good secondhand replacement and was told to follow the flushing techinique as they use needle roller so susceptible to contamination which rollers would just shrug off. The method was with car on axle stands drain gearbox oil before refilling with diesel or paraffin. Then, with engine running, work up and down the gears several times. Drain then refill gearbox with engine oil and work through gears again before final drain and filling with proper gear oil.
Engine in mine was a 1500cc Ford Taunus V4 with column change gearbox that had freewheel mechanism - legacy of the original two stroke version.

Seem to remember sidecar race guys used Saab 2T motors?

Same "family" but many differences so most standard parts not interchangeable.

We have had 3 Saab classic 900 turbos (current one is an ongoing resto), a 9000, and a 9-5 estate. BillJ on here has a Saab collection too. They are still reasonably priced for classics compared to old Fords or Minis.

My first Saab was a 1984 900 16v turbo S, had it from 77k to 185k on the original engine and was still going strong when I sold it, possibly the car I miss the most, way better than my Escort Mexico, then had a 9000 2.3 turbo, then 93 turbo. My dad runs a 9-3 1.9ttid and my brother a 9-3 2.0 turbo, great cars for comfortable long journeys. Though I tend use my Defender as my daily driver for the state of the roads where I live!
