Full credit to you buddy sounds like you've been there and back again and still come out a fighter so fair play to you. We WILL resolve this noods and get you tig welding as a means to defeat failure cos it sounds to me like the words "giving up" don't belong in the noods dictionary. Don't throw that yellow bag of **** in the bin yet mate. I think you and that little box are made for each other. Your both struggling but both trying hard to get results.

I'll hold him down you tie him up with the Tig torch and esCHEn can nick his duke I'll catch a lift on the back of the yammy as I don't know how well esCHEn rides. Lol.

The rods are Sif double decarbonised 2.4 mm and on the rod its stamped A17... ?

A17 is double dioxidising tig filler. It's ok but as EsCHen said a15 is triple deoxidise and a better filler really for steel.

Not likely to make a diff but I think I'd be using 1.6 filler rather than 2.4

I'm gonna back track on my post here and ask the question.
@TechnicAl the whole "deoxidise" thing in these Ms fillers. When it's single, double, triple etc is that because it contains 1,2,3 deoxidising elements like silicon or zirconium or does it de oxidise the steel 3 times. That makes no sense to me because Id of thought once deoxidised it's done ???????? Why the need to do it again????? Might be a stupid question and perhaps I'm the only one that doesn't know???????

Yes 2.4 is heavy gage noods. You'd want that little Buddy at full chat to be melting those.

Tell me about it mTe .. All in the last few years, I came out so to speak at work revealing a 30 odd year secret, that no one knew, I was under instruction up a crane, and had a really bad panic attack, work guessed something was really wrong.. I feared for my job, panicked again, was sent to see occupational health, took off my t shirt and revealed some, of my scars.. Abused at 14 by 9 people for over a year, my crime was I helped a handicapped boy who they had just beaten.. The independant investigation stated it was one of the most servere cases of abuse known at the time.. That came out 7 years ago now.. Was told by the abusers, or in my words, by those I felt sorry for, as they obviously had less in their lives than I did, if I ever told anyone, they would get my 11 year old Sister and showed me exactly what they would do to her..
I fought for my life then, and won, simply by surviving.. That's why both my kids and I work to help others.. It helps me to see others smile.. I'm the lucky one.. It defined me as a person and gave me a job for life.. To smile, help others and never ever give in..
Tig welding ain't gonna beat me.. No way..

Hang on in there Noods, you have my full sympathy, there is no frustration on earth equal to that induced by the 'TIG'.
The ungodly process is more fickle than the female of our species! it has so many picky little variables, all or any of which can be slightly out and combine to reduce you/me to a torch smashing, tantrum throwing sobbing mess. A ceramic cup smashing to smithereens is very therapeutic, if only briefly.

I've always considered the term triple deoxidised to be nothing more than a marketing term, how many times can you deoxidise something, its either deoxidised or its not,

While I can't help with your tig I can let you have a go with a decent lid , you might do better if you can see what's going on .

I would suggest 2 things need to be sorted out before anything else. Firstly have your machine properly checked by a competent LWS. Secondly while you are at the LWS ask to try some helmets and see if you can see better than with the one you have.
A while back I tried an RT machine which the owner had for a year, and thought his lack of talent was the reason he couldnt get to grips with welding. Turned out the machine was faulty..................

Just the ticket Paul cheers for that and my thoughts exactly. Once it's done it's done. You can't do it 3 times so I'm guessing there must be 3 deoxidising agents in a15. Alu???? Zirc???? Whatever they are again why the need if one will do what's needed.

In all seriousness I'll help any one out if I can and noods knows this but he's a busy man working crazy hours so I'll simply leave at "the door is always open"
I'm not the neatest Welder or most knowledgable guy on here but I have faced pretty much every hurdle known and learnt one way or another how to over come it. I did not take to it like a duck to water. I was fascinated by it and admired guys that did it so lots of perseverance and not giving up along with a shot at a company willing to put time in with me got me going. 17 years on 10 of those full time tigging Alu the rest tigging what I want when I want and I'm in a position to pass on a few trade secrets. I still use a Tig torch daily but it's for my own jobs that I take on and in my time. Much more enjoyable IMO.
