Haha. Someone is paying attention!

How about these?

Fifteen-twenty gallon tanks of paraffin. Came as part of a job lot. As an example, for that lot (75 litres) I paid a fiver!

So much other stuff including a MINT Record vice (84M) and an almost perfect 12x24 inch toolroom surface plate, I wont bore you.

best guess them tins are worth a tenner each empty, but if you waited another while......

as for boring me about tools, youd be going well when you would tbh.

Wow. The deceased had a small workshop where he kept the Bentley. Nice tools (!) and the entire garage was decorated with carefully stored cans. There may be some minty gems in there, I'll check the other tins. Pretty sure I have a CastrolR tin in the pile. His benefactor had no idea what the stuff was worth so I basically filled the van. Here's the vice:

I like restoring this stuff but that vice just needs a wipe down with an oily rag.

I did (honestly) try to explain to the seller how valuable some of the bits were but his eyes glassed over so I just kept saying "fiver?" and he kept saying yes!

Don't know if that's been reground or if it's new old stock. I had to peel off some original greaseproof paper. Lives under this top now.

Not a great example of woodwork but I had to do something quickly. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a surface like that to remain clear of crap in a workshop. It's like a bleedin magnet and you'll end up piling things on top of it without knowing you're doing it.

I have used surface plates before (during my apprenticeship) but they do exhibit surprising effects when you put flat things on them.

Like these matched parallels (that came with the lot).

They not only "stick" to the surface but will also float across the top as if on a cushion of air. which, I guess, they are.

Yeah I heard about that. What happens? Do they permanently attach? we used to play with slip gauges which was another really weird effect to discover.

<edit> van der Waals forces, oil glueing up and air pressure by all accounts. Fascinating. eventually a pair of gauge blocks would effectively weld themselves together as the atoms in one surface form a bond with those in the other!

i have an old castrol tin here that id be a good age.
its a tin soldered one with a cast alu cap on it.
id say its worth a few bob but its eating no grass where it is.

thats a nice vice, a quick lock one too, proper old school stuff thats in mint condition.
it id make big coin in a dear place, at auction it id make the best end of 50-70 odd.
a lad not far from me that sells tool room stuff had 4 new, old record vices for sale, 6" ones.
he would have rare stuff from time to time but managing to get your hands on 4 unused old school record vices is a rare one.
and he knew it, £350 a pop.
