Listen mate I have no problem with you or anyone who has a view . You are entitled to it. Like you I don't like xmas just loads of money wasted and no one has any left to buy anything us oldies try to make a few quid with for weeks and week after xmas.Must be Christmas everyone is peeing me off!!
Not trying to pee anyone on here off mind. Gets your goat when you are putting in so many hours and getting no where and then someone complains he has it hard. Had a go at one of the salesman at work when he came out to see how we were doing with the machine. Told him I was full of cold and sore throat, etc, etc. His reply you just have to go through the pain and get on with it. My reply was (plenty of swear words) I have a big hammer and a big grinder, you have a phone and pen now p@$% off back to your office
Only things worse than a compartment fire...
fire on a submarine (idea of that terrifies me...)
then
Fire on a warship 100 miles offshore...
95% of firefighters want to do as much as they can safEly. It's the Elf in safety that stops them because if they go against the rules the will be sacked....gross misconduct. In my case no one was asking them to go in what they were asking was to help. The farmer in question it was his living. Its this culture of its too dangerous don't do it. Jesus if we ever had to fight another war we might as well just roll over and surrender. It was a case a couple of weeks ago when Glenridding was flooding local contractors came with heavy machinary to shore up the defences. The police told them to stop because it was dangerous. Glad to say they ignored it and carried on.
Thing is I did 32 years and don't recognise that description of your mate. We used to have bars and could drink at work but that was in place when we had a 72 and then 57 hour week. That soon went quite rightly. But then so did many ff the conditions people mention when speaking about ff moaning.I don't understand a lot of people's approach nowadays.
If you're not happy with your lot, change it. Complaining that somebody else has it easier than you is pretty immature in my view. Take responsibility for your own position. Too many people are too interested in how good everybody else has it.
For what it is worth, my pal who'll be 50 ish was a firefighter. They put him through his HGV, he, by his own admission, played pool or slept most nightshifts, had a subsidised gym membership, a decent salary, 4 on 4 off rotating shift pattern that meant he had one week in three off, I think, was able to play plenty of golf and had a side job driving a lorry, using the HGV licence.
But....he was caught in the pension change and was understandably unhappy about it, had continuous training (physical and operational), and, oh yes, one other thing.... he had to be prepared to run into a burning building at a moment's notice, at four in the morning to try and save lives (the lives whose carelessness had, as often as not, put him and others in danger).
Beggar that. They're welcome to their four on four off, pool on nightshifts and pension.
He hates to see any blue flashing light. He says that means that someone somewhere is in trouble. And hearing him discuss the firefighter's dilemna - a bit like the professional soldier's dilemna - of not wishing anyone to be hurt or come to harm, but feeling excitement at some "action" that they have trained and prepared for is both interesting (and a little worrying) and wholly understandable.
As for burning property where there is absolutely no risk to life - let it burn. Imagine what those who complain about that decision would have to say about the fire officer who sent firefighters in to retrieve bales of hay when one of them came out in a body bag.
I was going to retire at 50 too, but got divorced. Now im happy but poor and will need to work a tad longer. My mate was adament he was going to retire at 50 and get another job. All I can say is god help him he is going to get a shock. He has a few years yet though till he does it.
Happy new year!!
I only know of a 2 2 3 system not 4 on 4 off. Some will try and claim it's that but I guess if they work 9 hours in a day they would also want paying for it not call it a day off.
Is this the fire service where they retire at 50 on a full pension (and complaining about it)? One of my best mates is in the fire services since he left school and never been to a major fire. Even he admitted even the car crashes are never that major they are built a lot stronger with more protection. He has only seen one person killed in a crash and that was because he had a heart attack and nothing to do with the crash. The biggest problem the fire service has and in his words boredom, you can only sweep the yard so many times.
To be honest I would not like to be on either , even if they were not on fire. LolFair point...least on a surface ship you can jump overboard...bit difficult to do that on a submarine
