Chances are if they are retained and did not turn out there was not enough available to make up crew or they did not get in the station in time and we're stood down.

Yeah its the latest lunacy....removing a real fire engine means that blue van might be passing an house fire but can't effect a rescue or comit a BA team.........but then a real fire engine has to come from further away.In Teesside we have a 'small fires unit'; it's a Merc Sprinter. Painted blue

Confused....two separate issues here. I will be the first to agree others jobs are as dangerous if not more. Especially if a fire fighter is well trained and so are his officers. No one is decrying any jobs others do...far from it.last year i did a callout to a block of flats to reset the fire alarm system and check any damaged electrics - there was 4 engines there and the fire chief in his car all standing aroundi went in , some idiot had set a little box of firelighters at -someones door and burnt the carpet and scorched the door
fire chief strutting his stuff getting --angry that there was no one to-- get in touch with till the next morning and had a go at me wanting my bosses number ,i havent got a boss and i havent the guys number i do the callouts for thats what he pays me for make my own desicions . admittedly some of there jobs are dangerous but so are ours on building sites falling off ladders and roofs and nearly getting electrucuted is no fun
As for the guy in the car he was not a fire chief. Terminology has changed to pretend they are posher than they are. They would have been an assistant div officer or now called area commander.
But why he was upset with you you did not make clear. There are protocols he has to follow which may seem stupid to most people but might prever him loosing his job . Thousands of man hours are 2asted ensuring a recall does not happen.....often instant dismissal. But a piles of smouldering rubble bursting back up into flames is a totally different issue to a small fire in a dwelling not being extinguished and the whole house burning down.
Common sense has left the building sadly.
Yeah a few places tried it. Sheep mentality. Duty Officers on bikes fine....they don't do a lot anyway. But operational crews...crazy.

I had to revisit this one after sleeping on it. Not wishing to get into an argument but adding a few facts.
Firefighters no longer retire at 50 despite paying almost 15% of their wages into a scheme that was compulsory and then after 20 years being told sorry but you can no longer have what was guaranteed when you joined. Most will have to wait till they are 60.
It's not about fitness but fire resilience at that age. Compartment fires are dangerous. No one who has not been in one will ever appreciate it.....
Cars are without doubt safer but the figures on this will show that vast amounts of people still die or need extraction. I lost count how many people I have seen killed in car crashes. Hundreds not 10's and the road we were built to cover had way less accidents than expected but those we did not on that stretch of motorway included a guy who's head was on the back seat (severed) and 3 killed by a girder swinging across the carriage way.
As for Boredom you would be amazed at the training needed to keep up competancies. If he only has a yard to sweep he has a poor OIC., low level of professionalism and a very very outlying station in the Country.
But once again it's not a thread about who's job is the hardest but to bring to everyone's attention that attendance times will be rapidly extending at a logarythmic rate as they are starting to shoot up already.
Please have an escape plan ready and ensure your workshop extinguishers can actually put a fire out and not just contain it for 5 mins or so......

I have many times in training, but twice for real, not an experience I ever wish to repeat.
I have my extinguishers, fire blanket etc, but quite surprising how many dont!
As for firemans pension, i understand their moan, in effect about broken promises. But in comparison to many, they have a moan, but probably less than steelworkers for example.

I know at times they have a hard job but me personally think they are moaning about nothing. The majority of the people in this country will have to retire and a good deal past 60 doing much more harder, difficult jobs with very little or no pension at all. Just passed the local police sargent who has just retired at 55 jogging down the road. Why? Make him retire the same time as the rest of the tax paying public, the same with the fire service. If he is fit enough to jog down the road what wrong with him? What I think is they have had so good for so long and now they want to change it they are starting to twist about it as I would.
I spent some time in the underground rescue. We used a BA system with a 2hours +20min limit. It used to burn your lungs it used to get that hot. Fancy trying to stretcher a 16 stone man out 3km in a 5' 6" seam (I am 6') that was painful. Yes the fire service has a hard, difficult job at times but if the are fed up leave and get adjusted to the real world.

Your personal opinion is fine but you quite obviously don't understand the implications, not just for the firefighter but more importantly for the public. Which is a shame.
You are not on your own and I would be happy if the facts were true but Firefighters pay 14% of their salary into a pension for 30.years. we're guaranteed the benefits and it was compulsory to BE IN THE PENSION SCHEME. (It's changed now and many people are not joining a pension)
There is no harder job than a rescue from a compartment fire.
The sadest thing is the fact many people saw we have to work a couple of years extra to ask why it's not wrong for firefighters to work for an extra 10 or 12 years. And they just don't have a clue why its wrong...

If I was trapped in a burning building I think I would be a bit happier to see a bunch of younger operatives coming to rescue me than someone who needed the stair lift to get me out of the building. If they have paid into a pension they have every right to draw it on maturity so if that is at 55 then so be it. The government is moving the goalposts on a lot of former gilt edge pensions but it always seems to affect those at the sharp end not the fat cats like themselves.

Yes I opted into my pension when I was 18. Trouble is it will currently pay less than £2000 a year so I will not be able to retire at 65. My body will be saying retire at 55 but it will not be viable. So another 10+ years of throwing a hammer and grinding with the noise and dust my body has already had to endure. My mate left school and joined the fire service, his dad was already in so he has no real world experience of how everyone else works. He will retire when ever, told me 50, and will be as fit as a 30/40 year old doing my job. The fire service will not even fit fire alarms around here any more they get contractors in to do it.

Must be Christmas everyone is peeing me off!!
Not trying to pee anyone on here off mind. Gets your goat when you are putting in so many hours and getting no where and then someone complains he has it hard. Had a go at one of the salesman at work when he came out to see how we were doing with the machine. Told him I was full of cold and sore throat, etc, etc. His reply you just have to go through the pain and get on with it. My reply was (plenty of swear words) I have a big hammer and a big grinder, you have a phone and pen now p@$% off back to your office

Too late mr stil chopped it up. And it went into a few skips, the local tip. Etc.
I have another axle lying in the shed....but will probably flog it. Not much desire to use it, im having a clear out. Sold my half blown harley yesterday. Probably for the best, i felt no emotion for it when he drove away with it.
Also looks like my fire emergency response training will not be refreshed at work, cost cutting and its not part of my current role. Stayed current for over 30 years. Once it expires, if i need it in the future will have to start from scratch again. Quite irritating thatll teach me checking my work mail when im off!
