Hi, I see what you mean about TD5 hubs (after some research), I didn't realise they had gone to crush tube. As Waldershelf says there is no need to change the stub axle, The hub bearings run in oil so they tend to last longer than in grease, so they could be alright and not need changing. What is the mileage? It may only cost an oil seal.
If you do pull them down then you could convert them to the double nut set up on earlier models. Here are a couple of links -

I'm not suggesting you use the Ebay vendor, but he does give you the part Nos if you only need to get the nuts and tab washer, if the bearings are OK. Good luck.

I love it when you talk dirty, fifty shades of grey primer or what ? I went down to my friend's yesterday and he was sat under a G reg welding the holes where the gearbox cross member had been. He's fitted new outriggers and is converting it to 200tdi. It's not his he's doing it as a side job for some spending money. The screen is coming off today to repair the surround, honestly the only good thing about this motor is the tyres.

maybe I could use my old nuts as locking nuts ? Haha I don't know what I keep saying! Lol. Sounds like the good tires are debatable, there wasn't really anything good about mine haha, I see friends stripping there's down and just wish mine was that clean

Was going to suggest making a note of the bearing numbers while you can see them, then buy from a bearing supplier cheaper than an LR supplier, I've used Simply Bearings for car, bike & quad bearings, seals etc., good prices.

I ordered the kits as you need to pull the seals to do them I think, the bearing on there own from Landrover are only £3 each or something. And the kits totalled £30 for 4 so not worth worrying about.Short of logging in every few minutes, I will never keep up with your progress/purchases!

I'll get a picture next time I go down there, you'll probably feel better about yours when you've seen this. We were looking at the ventilated front suspension turrets for added cooling when the shock absorbers are working hard. Nothing has come off of it without the angle grinder.

Sounds like mine to be fair, I went through 20 cutting disks stripping it... I'm going to keep on top of cleaning it

I think Land Rover changed the wheel bearing design on the TD5 to make them easier/quicker to fit, you just tighten them up to the specified torque and away you go. The earlier design requires a certain level of "expertise" to set them up, it's easy when you know how but not as quick as the later design.

The double nut version, setting up with a clock on the hub to measure end float, I did find a useful post on a forum showing how to set them using torque instead.

TD5 defender uses a spacer between the two bearings. The single nut is then torqued up. There are about 10 different size spacer. You set up using the largest. Measure end float. Deduct the end float from the spacer width used. Replace spacer with the correct one equal to the dimension calculated allowing for the preload tolerance. Cant remember the exact setting at the moment. Go online and search for Land Rover RAVE for the Defender and TD5s. Covers almost all of the defenders to about 2002. http://www.myrangerover.co.uk/MyRangeRover/RAVE.html might have it.

I use a similar method, can't remember the torque values without a trip to the garage "Library" but basically you tighten the inner nut to a torque value spin the hub, torque it again, spin the hub again, back off the nut and torque to a much lower torque value, spin the hub and torque it again. Fit the second nut just tight, bend the tab washer over the inner nut, torque up the outer nut, bend the tab washer over the outer nut. Job done.
Not long after I bought my current Defender I had a front wheel bearing fail at 70mph on the M1 (scary) which needed new stub axle and all the rest of the bearings, seals etc. After replacing the failed bearing I stripped, cleaned, regreased and set up the other three. That was 4 years ago, no problems since. If anyone wants the torque values I will look them up.
