The Omnimill weighs 482 kgs and the 181 appears to be the same machine without the vertical spindle so I'm thinking around 400 kgs? I hope the lift will handle it, I'm f***** otherwise.

You can then sell it on to me or swap for my lathe lol

Oh ******, I forgot about tooling. Speaking of tooling, am I correct in thinking that a D.I is pushed in whereas a D.T.I has a leaver and measures more precisely(or accurately)?

Tooling is going to hit you hard. I have a lot of lathe tools and the one thing (apart from cash flow) that stopped me getting a mill is the tools I will need to buy to get full use from it. Fortunately my father in law was a die miller and I have his tools to use so step blocks and parallels and hundreds of end mills are sorted. (many will need sharpening though ) I will need a decent rotary table though...and a decent collet set up.

The one you purchased has a vertical spindle on it though doesnt it??

It has the double swivel vertical spindle that has no quill feed and runs from the horizontal, the Omnimill has an extra motor, quill and 2.5" bar for its vertical spindle so it's much heavier.

Well I did presume you'd checked that the tail-lift could handle it... We once bent the tail lift of a Luton, I think it went to insurance to repair.

Yeah, umm, I kinda haven't. I said to mum I hope it will hold it and she said "it would be a bit crap if it won't". I doubt I can phone them today but maybe tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.

If you haven't hired the van yet just book it through us or another pallet company. If you must drive there first and make sure it is palletised. Either ratchet strapped or bolted to a proper full size pallet. The PROPER way to do it is to first screw a piece of ply to the pallet then through bolt it.
We can easily cope with a milling machine that size. We have done Bridgeports but I hate doing them - at your own risk comes to mind then!
Remember though pallet trucks only have small wheels and need very smooth ground to operate on - NO gravel drives!!!
We see it all - people with 1 ton brick pallets on grass - when the lorry turns up it's a case of "Where is your crane". What do people expect for £50????

I've just had a quick look at delivery and seen speedshift, it will cost £60 from them, that's less than hiring a van, not even including fuel.

Seriously though people MUST realise that a pallet network is NOT a specialised machinery moving service. Goods MUST be secured to the pallet itself. Drivers wont have a clue.
95% of problems are caused by bad packing.
I bought a big TIG welder on Ebay not long ago. It weighed about 300kg. I asked the bloke if he would palletise it for me. The answer was "Yes no problem I have done this loads of times". When it arrived it was on a crap pallet - the wheels had gone through it and the machine was tied on with a bit of blue rope. It was a miracle it didnt go over!
Always ask the seller to get a photo of how it is packed if you can.

The seller is BMTM so, going by the fact that he services machinery for a living, he should be able to secure it properly.
A normal pallet is 1.2m x 1m, yes? Going by the drawings on lathes, I think the table + hand wheels is 1.5m(the depth is <1m) - Would this overhang matter seeing as it's not overhanging the pallet at the base of the machine but about a foot above the pallet?
Would your company be able to compete with the Speedshift quote?

Yes a normal pallet is 1.2x1.
Sadly if it is 1.5m then you will need to pay for 2 spaces as that is what we will get charged. For this reason when a bathroom company ship a bath they make a cradle to stand it upright.
It didnt look that big in your photo. You could book it as 1 pallet if it is only slightly over but be prepared for the extra charge if we get hit by either depot.

Oh and make sure the table is wound down as low as it can go - and the machine vice is placed low down as well. Anything to lower the Centre of Gravity. If the vice is removed make sure it is secure - the network handles 15,000 pallets a night - they will NOT find it again if it is loose.

I'll ask him to box all the loose bits and fix the box to the pallet with it. I will also ask him to take off the handwheels to make it slightly smaller.
It's great knowing I can get big, heavy stuff delivered from anywhere for so little money.

Just don't blame me if he sticks it on a crap pallet and it goes horribly wrong. It will be insured - free insurance is £5 per kg of actual weight. So if it weighs 500kg then it is covered UP TO £2,500. They will only pay out to a maximum of what you actually paid for it though.

The seller said he will ratchet strap it to a pallet for £15 we have just ordered Speedshift to collect it on wednesday.
How long do they take on average? And will it be a problem to get a pallet truck over the 1"-2" step at the front of the garage?

Have you got a piece of 3mm plate to use as a ramp, or the other way is to roll the pallet truck up to the edge of the step, jack it all the way up, place blocks under the forks, release the pressure so that the wheels lift and then slide timber the same height as the step under the wheels, jack it back up, remove the blocks and away you go!

Is the step up or down? And is it 1" or 2"??? Our warehouse has a 1" step - taking goods out is easy - coming in you need a bit of a run - over 1" coming in is going to be very hard. A bit of timber or some plate may well be needed.

If we collect Wednesday then on an economy service it will be delivered Thu/Fri - the depot will ring to book it in. Remember this is a non guaranteed service. They are approx times but offer more flexibility than the guaranteed next day service - cheaper as well.

Little story - one that still annoys me no end.

We were asked to collect a thicknesser/planer. I phoned myself to make sure it was all ok. I asked the bloke if it was strapped to the pallet. "No" he said - "it is fine". I told him it wasn't fine and needed to be strapped down. He said he just couldn't be bothered. I went back to our customer and told him the problem. He said he would speak to the bloke. He then came back to us saying it is all ok now - go ahead and collect.
The driver went in - machine fell off the tail lift. The bloke then tried to sue us!!! What more could we do?

for a few extra squidums imho you should of collected yourself matey for a few reasons and one being you can check for damage or missing bits and another when these old machines are stripped they over the years kinda grow around the fixings and go back together much better with the bolts/nuts on the original studs and holes. You will be getting a box of bits thats been stripped prior to shipping with no indexing marks. good buy though at that price and goodluck.
