Looked through 6 shelves of assorted ancient cans, tins, bottles packets and no solvent based stripper but I did come across a bottle of brake fluid. This has been known to strip paint, usually when not required 
Don't know it it will touch this type of paint but I'm away on business for a couple of days so will leave it to fester.

It will. I use brake fluid instead of paint stripper, and there isn't anything it hasn't lifted yet, eventually. May need two or three applications unless you leave it soaking in a jar of the stuff, but it'll definitely soften the paint.

These name plates have a strange but nice finish don't they. My M300 badge has the same pattern. Looks a bit like a hessian bag has been used, to press the pattern in.
I did think about painting mine, but then thought better of it, alas painted the M300 badge, looks terrible.

Agreed, the old finish is great and I'm sure it gets better with age, and repainting could look too new. if it was just fair wear and tear I would have left it but the blobs of hammerite had to go and they didn't want to shift without a fight which would have left patches of bright copper.
I'll have to work out a way of ageing it, a bit like using milk and cow poo to accelerate the ageing of stonework

A bit more progress, the brake fluid is still doing its thing, not quite cooked yet. I made a start on the cast aluminium door, it is a very rough casting, the sand blasting as removed all the old filler so I've had to replace it. Didn't take long with a DA sander then Abranet sanding block.
The major success was the motor rewire to delta, got it linked up to an inverter today and it works fine. The speed/on/off controller I have is in a crappy plastic box so I'm going to gut the old NVR switch (on the left) and put the controls in there. It will look far more in keeping when its stripped of the blue hammerite and painted the same colour as the mill.

Brought back a funny memory: Back when Lotus were at Cheshunt, we built some special trailers to lift the Elan kits off the assembly trollies without dragging a bunch of guys off the assembly line. It was a four wheeled open centred design with two of the wheel units fitted with hydraulic rams. Think a sort of fork lift trailer. The suspension-less kit was wheeled out of the shed on its bedstead. The trailer was pushed around the bedstead and the hand pump woggled to lift the car of the trolly. Kick trolly out, lower the suspension to normal height and drive off. Warn the customer to have boxes etc at a certain level to receive the kit. Job done.
So, we arrive with the first trailer and Chapman with the rest of the engineers watch while we demo it. Faultless first go. Second time, the old man released the valve with a flourish to let it down. Well, a fine jet of fluid sprayed out of the vent, all over some parked Elans. Panic from the execs, until it was pointed out it was mineral, so not paint stripper, and the cars in question were due for repaint as they had defects. Was fun to see the consternation, less so for my father. It also had a small crane to lift the engine and other bits into a front bay for the trip. Typicly, the disconnect between needs and wants resulted in us making three of the trailers before they realised they did not need that bit, as the parts were carried in the van.

Hi KP, I'm in the US next week but not going anywhere for an extended stay just yet. So I've hopefully bought another TS I should be picking up a light vertical tomorrow.
In the mean time I have bee stripping down the main column so I can sand the crappy hammerite off and paint it, here's a pic of progress, I've got the lowest shaft out, and the middle one shown in the pic, just got to get the top one out but down in London at the mo.

kemppifrog, the tom senior catalogue is 1931 , so I think it wouldn't be long after he set up in business. Its amazing the amount of different products and options available, especially from such a small factory.

We have just stripped a cast iron fireplace with cheap paint stripper from B and Q. It was about £6 a litre, comes in a plain white and green bottle and is called Diall. It worked really well - better than Nitromors, I thought. It's not on the website, but worth checking out if you are in store.
Did the really hard bits with a Dronco disc from Weldequip and sharpened up the detail with a Dremmel.

Here's the TS light vertical I've just picked up from a technical college - its in bits still but the intention is to reassemble and use here without any repainting. The tray has seen better days but it would look odd if I just repainted that.
The light vertical base is at the back the M1 at the front, almost identical apart from the light vertical is 18" wide and the M1 14" wide. I'm guessing later M1 bases are the same width. The M1 is from 1961 and the light vertical from 1973. The tray for both models are virtually identical in shape and size.
Here's the column and carriage.
And the S type head with new single phase motor, its set for 110v but can be wired for 220v.
There is some back lash on the carriage, no worse than normal for this age however I think a DRO and maybe even a CNC project is on the cards - when I get around to it. I'll use the M1 for mainly horizontal milling.

Got back to renovating the M1 as its cluttering up the new bench and I have a couple of small jobs for it and I want to get the light vertical up and running too.
The main column is ready for primer, there were a few big lumps of casting that need the angle grinder but mainly small amounts of filler. I used upol dolphin glaze.
I took the slides off so I could work on the knee. Just started on the overarm bracket.
Tom Senior badge after a couple of weeks in brake fluid and a jet wash. needs a little bit more preparation before painting. Will use a very light coat of dark brown paint, or some kind of chemical to make it go dark bronze then pick out the lettering in white.
Next job is preparing the power feed gearbox for priming, as you can see the Hammerite was applied liberally but sporadically
After that just the knuckle head to prepare then its spray day.

There's a dark cloud called DIY on the horizon, SWMBO is hinting at decorating and windows needing maintenance amongst other things
I'll have to make a start or she will get somebody in and I'll probably spend more time putting it right.....
Just ordered the oil seals for the power feed gearbox, the manual has the sizes in which is refreshing after trying to find out how a Colchester Chipmaster seal translates from the obscure manufacturers code number to something you can get today.

Spray day arrived. I didn't have much time so I put on etch and primer filler (upol no8 etch and high 5 primer filler) yesterday then a light sand and panel wipe this morning, with a few small dabs of filler here and there.
All went well except for some reason the gearbox lid reacted repeatedly with the primer even if I did light dusting coats. So I've scraped that back to bare metal and will start again. First time I've sprayed with a gun (although used rattle cans for the primers) so pretty happy. No runs, some areas could have done with a bit more prep but on the whole pleased. Good practise for when I paint the dexta.
I've still got a few bits to paint by hand but should be reassembling soon however I'll let it harden for a week first.

Already scratched it!
When I lifted out of the barn and up into the workshop after spraying, I made sure the winch chain didn't touch it but as I lifted it higher the lifting chain slack drop onto the top of the main body.
Luckily most of the scratches will be under the motor, and the one that show are very minor
