Help needed on my diff...

I am surprised a thing like that only has two pinion diff. I guess it must have some heft.

I have seen reports about the pin wallering out the housing, fortunately this pin was still very tight.

Bearing caps in.

Mesh test, although there is nothing I can do about it as I don't have any shims to adjust the pinion depth.

Ideally be better nearer the root. As you have gone to all that trouble already .......

I know, but I'm now sick of this job and just want it done, so pushed on.

The ends of the axles are held into the diff with these clips. One went on ok and the other pinged off into the depths of the diff, thankfully I was able to fish it out with a magnet. Otherwise doesn't bear thinking about.

Back cover on with sealant.

Just need to bolt the prop shaft on then bolt the diff back onto the subframe from above! Ludicrous design bolting from above when there is no access to get to the fixings.

Careful when you test drive it, it may be a bit tight leading to lots of side ways action!

Well I sort of finished off this afternoon, but, when filling the diff I managed to get a bit of plastic in there through the filler hole. The bit I circled in the pic below.

I'll drain the diff tomorrow in the hope it comes out, if it doesn't, how much do I need to worry about it?

I don't want to have to remove the rear cover again unless I really have to as it means dropping the diff again.

Think of it as an oil additive?

Hopefully it comes out when you drain it,if not try flushing it out with a gallon of diesel.

I knew someone that put a plastic bag, cut up into strips ,into the diff on a Bedford van years ago to quieten the whine it was making . Ideally your bit of plastic should be removed but will it cause any damage ?

Leave it and tell people it's got semi-autonomous backlash shimming.

19 yr old me would leave a plastic speedo drive gear in a Lancia gearbox and forget about it. And in the few years I owned that Beta HPE, nothing happened.

55 yr old me would be listening for destruction every single second of driving it.

Soft plastic probably won't do much - but if the internals of that diff have a relatively narrow passage for oil from the nose bearing that might get that plastic in and cause flow problems.

Must admit when I saw the photo of that pump I thought what a stupid design. How’s the diff?

Go on then what would you have done if it hadn't come out? Strip it or drive it?
