It amazes me how they can actually determine the cause of a fire in a massive destruction like this where a whole building and everything in it has burnt collapsed and been waterlogged.

Well I’m just guessing as though you mentioned, there’s nothing left to get to a conclusion I would imagine though , on the local news from the vape shop there were small explosions not long after the fire was being recorded.

It’s not hard to guess what caused them, I’ve seen a lithium battery fire and it’s not hard to imagine if it was in the vicinity of other batteries how very quickly the issue would get out of control.

They’re everywhere now, vapes, phones, power banks, tablets, laptops etc, it’s only a matter of time whereby one goes off in a mode of transport whereby escape isn’t an option.

I did a stint with Fire Investigation and I was told not to go back again. They had almost nothing to investigate in the previous month. The first night I was with them we had 6 to investigate and 4 on the second night.
All fairly basic but we had one that was put down to a pigeon picking up a lighted nub end and taking it back to its nest in a Belfast roof.
Way before CCTV was main stream .

Apparently the Investigation Officer had a fire previously which was put down to the same cause. On this second occasion the pigeon was well know for taking dead nub ends to its nest. It wasnt a particularly large fire. It was well contained but the OIC of the first attendance was flumoxed as to the cause and called for Fire Investigation out of interest.

Yep. A lot of times witnesses are a valuable source of info. But seats of fire is a pretty logical science.

This occasion it will be very easy with photographic evidence and physical witnesses.

It looks like they are going to demolish the rest of the building on safety grounds.

Similar if not to the same extent took place in Belfast a few years back. Mammoth restoration has kept a city landmark alive.

Sorry, haven't read the entire thread so this may have already been discussed. So, when I saw this pic, it made me wonder why the firemen seemed to be looking like it was job done, let's head back to the station.

I'd guess it's probably around the point where they realise they won't be putting the fire out from the ground, and they're still waiting for an Aerial Pump to arrive from Edinburgh, as apparently both of Glasgow's were of the road for maintenance issues

Some fire services post incident reports on their website detailing what went on, don't know if SFRS do it.

As mentioned above, the internal structure of those buildings is largely stone fronted with hefty timberwork internally, and large fire-loving gaps between lathe&plaster ceilings and the timber floor above. Fire blocking tech just wasn't thought of in the 1880s.
In retrospect it would have been a good idea for the Council to insist on sprinklers in units as they came up for re-let.
Just as well that most of the space above the ground floor was offices and storage, no residential worries.

In 2023, Holyrood cut the number of High Reach Appliances, from 26 to just 16 for the whole of Scotland. In Glasgow, six appliances were cut to two. Presumably at some point someone decided that six appliances were necessary to cover a large city the size of Glasgow, and then someone else decided that it made financial sense to cut it down to two...you can almost hear them saying "but there will never be six fires at the same time!"

In 2014 the Glasgow School of Art suffered a devastating fire and then in 2018 a second blaze gutted what was left. Just five years later it was felt to be a good idea to cut the number of high reach appliances. Not for the first time, I am amazed at the total lack of ability in the ranks of those who make these decisions! It's very hard not to get political so I'll say no more.

I'm currently working for a blue light fleet, and can't really comment publicly, but if the public knew how borderline operations are at times, they'd be quite shocked, and its only going to get worse, due to various reasons.

Speaks volumes actually - no lives at risk let it burn. You can't fight fires properly from outside!
My old retired firemen mates have plenty to say about this.................................

They didn't do a very good job of saving the last castle / palace that caught fire. I seem to think a lot of ot was destroyed.

There's senior officers who run the show.
Many of them have never seen a decent fire at the sharp end in their or life.
We have to take orders despite knowing they are often wrong. It used to be time served promotin based on experience and exams. Now its of you face fits or you are a yes "person"

Senior management have no guts. Just looking after themselves.
West Midlands announced a review and then there will be cuts after the review is 0ver.
