Passer-by tried to tackle Glasgow vape shop fire which led to inferno

Lamin Kongira told BBC Scotland News he had been walking past when a shopkeeper ran out saying "fire, fire".

If this guys to be believed, he says it was a bank of chargers under the counter,

And people should keep fire blankets and loads of fire extinguishers handy - AND learn to use them

BBC news today has an interview of a brave passerby who ran into the shop to try to put it out.
There were *no* fire extinguishers in the vape shop (!!) so he had to run to the shop next door to get one. By the time he got back things had started exploding…

As soon as I saw the name Lamin I just knew he was a Gambian
One of my best friends is a Gambian and he is a Saint! He is an amputee and yet looks after other disabled people. A few months ago he evacuated the small care home he works in. Dragged out patients all by himself. Wheeled another out on his bed and then went back in to bring out car keys and an oxygen bottle

Yes metal will sag and bend. But it wont burn in the first place!
During the war the Germans had a heck of a job putting engineering business out of work. Asbestos roof, steel or brick. Concrete floors. And lathes and other such machinery would absorb a huge blast. Often back up and running a few days later.

With the number of vape shops on the high st hopefully councils will check the safety and fire insurance of them. Perhaps a risk assessment by the fire brigade?

As proved by a nasty hotel fire many are self assessment tick box exercises

the only assessments i do are for emergency lighting in flats offices shops and in a school just done the 3 hour yearly check on one, .over 150 to test out of that 25 needed replacing

Why did such a small fire result in total building destruction?
A mate of mine is a retired fireman - he said most fires start off small.

Because the facade at the parimeter was the only stone part of the building, it’s basically a wooden building inside the stone parimeter, it was built in 1851 and most large commercial buildings of this era in Glasgow were built this way.

It’s very sad this was such an iconic landmark
