Someone may have been shocked by the rust in the clutch drum and trying to stop it.
Doesn't it have separate oil for the gearbox? As in is it leaking gearbox or engine oil?

There is no seal between gearbox and primary.Indeed, it's leaking oil from the gearbox output shaft seal. That may or may not actually be gearbox oil.
It's also leaking from a number of other places but once the oil's stopped flowing from the output shaft seal which is the main source I'll be able to see how much and hopefully from where.

The seal in the backplate prevents oil leaking from the primary.
The sleeve gear bush is, in effect, the seal.
The dismantling did have a secondary benefit as the clutch basket pillars are well worn into ridges, the plate dogs are worn accordingly, and the liberal application of copper slip has made the plates unusable. So that lot will be getting sorted while I'm in there.If you keep going you will be at the other side of the engine!

It's not too bad TBH, just a lot of unbolting. It does make very clear how poor the design was and how easy they made it for the Japanese manufacturers to take over and dominate.Have you considered starting from the other side?

It's seeing things like that make me glad I bought an XS650.It's not too bad TBH, just a lot of unbolting. It does make very clear how poor the design was and how easy they made it for the Japanese manufacturers to take over and dominate.
I do like an XS, one of the Japanese bikes giving the British manufacturers a bloody nose in the early days. How different things would have been if BSA, Norton or Triumph could have produced something like the XS650.It's seeing things like that make me glad I bought an XS650.
They've got their own troubles, though.
