I agree with you, but thankfully for us we have a standing agreement with the whole family: Christmas presents only for kids and no-one else. Ever since we came to that arrangement I enjoy Christmas so much more - it's just a time when we all meet up and eat and drink, without any of the pressure that there was before.
Keep trying to tell my mother to go the same way but she will insist on turning up with (literal) sacks-ful of stuff for everyone, including the offspring of members of the family who are so far distant that they can't even know who she is. I wouldn't mind her including them if she didn't also do the same for me and my brothers who are far more well-off than she is.
Then she complains how expensive the gas is and sits with four coats on and a blanket over her, no heating on and the gas fire unlit









- not a big boozer. Still got wine I haven't drunk from last xmas...
