Is there a chance they're looking to now wean us off their traditional, cheap welders onto something more expensive and "must have"?

Can't be a coincidence that their industrial / military / space infrastructure is streaking ahead fuelled by our insatiable need.

Imagine these widely adopted in industry, our armed forces etc then they switch off the spares supply.

The optics and control system yes. Perhaps even the laser itself. That's why it costs millions for a 50kw unit and you can get industrial ones 4x the power for probably 1/10the price. People always think military hardware is cutting edge. It isn't. The tech World moves far to fast for them.
