Being a n00b I generally equate cost/brand with quality/safety. I know bugger all about these things other than I know 3M are decent as i have a couple of respirators for spraying and they have a good reputation. but other than that I know nothing about how they each compare in terms of eye safety or if they are even regulated to standards.

any concerns regarding eye safety, although I dont think you are going down the budget route which is perfectly acceptable for all the welding your planning doing, as long as there is no light shine paths which I very much doubt so you dont get burnt, a pair of safety specs will stop you or your daughter getting arc eye, (a flash). quite a simple mitigation often ignored or not known.

If you are thinking of spending £300+ and have no experience of high end masks it's probably worth a visit to a welding dealer to try out a couple of different ones.

absolutely, a few years ago I got an optrel as a replacement from my employer after my personal bought speedglas was destroyed at work, it was rubbish in comparison.

the only thing i will warn is dont touch the metal after you have welded it

as many of us have been burnt when we forget about it

Im not risking the chance of an expensive (for a hobbyist) helmet being a knock off with no warranty, and cant justify £500+ so i decided to go with the 3M Speedglas G5-03E Welding Helmet With G5-01 Welding Filter

im sure youll like the e and will serve you well for a long time. this is ones i use. two at far left are air powered g5 01 and 03. 01 i use alot as it has clear flip up and work light. 03pro in the middle. couple 9100s and 100v. im one of the few that still likes classic green filters. theyre two on the far right

That's a lot of helmet (that's what she said)

To be honest if I like the E, at some point I'll probably replace the r-tech with an 03.

Even being so new, I still fall into buy once cry once, or in my case, chronic swapsies. All my power tools and such are festool, purely because they don't get much use and when I replace them I hardly lose any money, in fact on several items I made a profit.....you can't say that about most tool brands.

Thanks, but i ordered it yesterday, will be delivered tomorrow will be interesting if theres a rebate or anything in the box though
