Getting on to Beer?

I never took to the stuff when I started drinking in my 20's. Now 39 I have always drank Whiskey or cider.

But in Italy at the moment and most places only have beer. So what would be a good way to try and like beer on a longer term basis plz. Good ones to start with?

If you're in Italy it'll be lager, so Moretti or Peroni are probably the ones to go for.
I'm a beer drinker, rather than lager, but if I see either of those on tap I'm often swayed away from the ales.

Just ask for small measures and give a variety a try, best way to find what you do and don't appreciate.

(And I daresay you'll have a far wider range to choose from that Peroni and Moretti... remember the advert "The French adore Le piat D'or" from years ago? They didn't, it was just the cheap stuff they didn't particularly appreciate so they shipped it over here and flogged it off!)

There's a new one out called Poretti, not sure if it's Italian or fake Italian but it's nice when served cold.
Peroni and Morretti are also very nice although I find the Morretti gives a slight hangover if I have to many

Mexican beers are very light, golden and refreshing. Modelo is my personal favourite.

You’re not really in beer country - mostly unremarkable, very fizzy lagers over there. All quite plain.

But, being plain, there’s not much to dislike about them. Take your pick and see if you can tell the difference. Peroni and Moretti are both drinkable.

Or, take a pic of the bar, or give us a list, and we might find you something interesting.

Maybe try and find something from a small local brewery. They usually create something better than the mass produced swill.
I went to Oz and everyone told me it would only be lager but I found some lovely proper beer from independent breweries.

You'll probably find most draught is lager or pilsner styles, (Forst is one brewery) and usually served in 0.2l or 0.4l with plenty of head but very refreshing.

The usual suspects (Moretti, Peroni etc) are available in bottle as are German wheat beers and some 'more exotic' Italian ones e.g. Ichnusa un-filtered is nice.

If your Norwich way head to Grain Brewery, fantastic little micro brewery that sell bottles on site.

If I was in Italy I'd be drinking some of their excellent wines!
Probably find that the local wine is a lot cheaper.
Its not a big jump from cider to white wine, though I prefer red.

Yes, a properly kept, cellar temp draught ale (cask and manual pump handle) is best.

I haven’t tried many lagers like that - they’re generally better served chilled and a bit fizzy from a gassed keg.

True. Lager is a beer type that’s been hijacked by the big commercials producing fizzy gnat’s p*ss, but it is a legitimate style.

For @JOEPRO - Beer is the general term, and comes in two main types, ale and lager:

Lagers are generally fermented cool, with a bottom-dwelling yeast, and served chilled.
Ales are generally fermented warmer, with a top-dwelling yeast, and served at cellar temp, 10degC-ish.

Lager examples: Pale*, Pilsner, Helles, Bock, Marzen.
Ale examples: Pale, Hefeweizen, IPA, Bitter, Stout, Porter.

*The Peroni you have would be a pale lager.
