I've noticed that a lot of pubs aren't keeping any bitter in, just the trendy pale ale now.
One of my locals always used to keep Speckled Hen and a couple of others, and it was OK. It's a bit of a youngster's pub, but they used to have live music on a couple of nights a week and that brought in an older crowd. They had an idea of how to keep it, if I bought a pint and it was off they'd accept that and do something about it. Once they stopped doing the music, I think the sales tailed off because the clientele are younger, they dropped down to only Speckled Hen, and half the time it was awful, so they changed it to Speckled Hen in a keg, rather than a cask. I wasn't enthusiastic to start with, but I've got used to it now. It's a bit colder, but I'm not as big a beer snob to really be able to tell any more. I expect if I had a pint of cask, then went and had a pint of keg, I'd be able to tell. But since they swapped over, I've never had to send one back.
Greene King Abbot ale was a favourite, never the same after they stopped using water from their own borehole and used mains supplied by Thames water![]()
Abbot remains one of my favourites, but I did think the taste had changed a bit recently, I'd put that down to it being quite a few months since I'd found anywhere selling it. The pub that used to keep it has now swapped to Directors, so I'll have forgotten what Abbot tastes like by the time they swap back.
