Could do with some help

Hi all, I’m new to welding and I’m no expert, Im going to have a a go at welding me astravan using me dads welder that I have no idea how to use and as he’s passed away I have nobody to ask. The welder is a cebora pocket Mig 130 that I know he bought new and spot welded a wing on a ford orion and then it was left in garage for 30 odd years, it’s as new with original roll of wire and co2 bottle it came with. Is the wire and gas still usable?

If there is gas in the bottle, it should be ok, if the wire isn't rusty it will be ok as well.
Co2 isn't the best gas for car body work but it will get you going.
Don't start on the van, try a few welds on some scrap that's the same thickness as what you will be welding on the van. (Probably 0.8mm)

Thanks all, I’ve been reading some old threads about my cebora Mig and it seems there’s a lot of people saying they have got one or similar that needs a wire tensioner arm or something and they can’t get one. If anyone would like to come and measure or whatever you have to do to 3d print one and your local to Paulton Bristol and know how to take it off and put it back your more than welcome.

Thanks for your advice. I went to Toolstation and purchased argon and co2 mix bottle. Hope that’s right, not tried to weld yet but I’m sure I will be back.

I wasn't aware that they did gas, unless you bought a "six minute" disposable?

Yes I did, the welder I have is as new which still has the disposable gas bottle regulator on. Those small bottles seem a bloody expensive hobby, if I master welding I will get a hobby weld bottle.

you will get just enough use out of a hobby bottle to realise you might not be brilliant yet, but you want to have another go...i started welding car stuff with a gasless mig, which people say is a bad idea but as long as you buy decent wire and have a decent enough machine its not all that bad. i moved to straight co2 then and solid wire, then eventually Ar/Co2 mix. gasless wire only needs the polarity of the leads swapping to be able to use it, so if thats something your machine can do it might be a cheap way to practice.

only over the bridge from you and my main yard for work is in keynsham, if you ever get frustrated and nothing seems to be making sense, a jaunt over the bridge on a saturday isnt any bother to see if i can help.

Thanks for that. Welding is a bit daunting but I’m not a quitter. I would have went gas less if I hadn’t inherited a gas mig. I’m quite close to keynsham so I might hold you to that. Thanks

I don't know much about cebora welders, but if there are easily changed connections for torch and ground clamp, it will run gasless wire. Not exactly the same as mig, but very, very similar. Alternatively, even a 10L bottle of ar/co2 mix will work out massively cheaper than the hobby bottles and if you get rent free bottles you don't have to pay anything til it needs filling up again

My mig is sat on the round tuit at the moment, needs looking at after getting a bit ambitious trying to stick a 10mm flange onto a bit of heavy wall 70mm box in 1 pass...so i bought a tig inverter to replace it

That’s way over my head, I’m a learner but from what I’ve read I think I would have used a stick welder for that, but hay ho, I don’t know how to use one of them either.

A stick welder would have been a much better option.

I'm pretty sure it's only a fuse inside that's gone, but since buying the tig I've found it's a very satisfying process and have used that for virtually everything since, plus the added bonus it will stick weld too for the heavier stuff.

I do miss the mig though, of all the processes it's the quickest, easiest to set up and it's not as fussy as tig.

I asked a few people about getting a tug and they all said I would have no hope of using it if I can’t Mig and stick weld. As I said I’m only a beginner in welding but I will get there. Isn’t that welding for aluminium or can it be used for everything?

Was thinking of fitting a couple of small "Dinze" sockets to the front of my SnapMig 130 Turbo, Which is a rebadged version of the Cebora Pocket Turbo 130.

Taking the torch wire out through the front of the welder through the strain relief thats used for the earth cable and fitting a dinze plug to it and another plug to the earth cable.

So I'd have a pair of sockets, + and -, a removeable earth cable and I could change the polarity of the unit so I can change from MIG/MAG to MOG (gas to gasless)

I've attached a copy of the wiring diagram

Hi, has anyone tried to convert one of these to gasless, I may be wrong but I am changing it over to Euro torch at the moment, If I add a second 24v PSU and a DC Motor drive controller that comes on via the switch in the gun the same power feed could feed in to a relay and then in to the contactor.
This would then allow me to add some kind of screw terminals inside the welder to allow the leads to be changed over depending on what I am welding.
Would this work?

Cobblers, welding is welding and although different processes, the route is the same, melt a filler into two or more bits of material causing a fusion. I would suggest you will pick up Tig faster if you have gas welding experience, possibly. But just because you cannot do one doesn't mean you cannot do the others. To be honest although most everything I do is Tig I would prefer MMA. I know, crazy right? But I find MMA (stick welding) very relaxing and satisfying. I have tons of welding rods that I likely won't use them all in my lifetime, but I wish I could.

I’m sure I read on here that you’re better off with gas? Mind you those disposable bottles are bloody pricey.

Yes and they will run out as fast as you buy them. On top of that you can't set the flow rate properly, so really do urge you to get a proper bottle. Otherwise it is like a surgeon trying to do his job with a blunt Stanley knife.
