Did some actual welding at work today. I very very rarely do any welding and I’m very under confident about it, but the tutor I had today was absolutely amazing. He drew the welds on the metal with a piece of wire to show me where I needed to put my mig wire, let me take my time and get into a proper position.

Every other place I’ve been has assumed I could weld already! First day I’ve taken work home I think. I’m cutting them open and polishing them for macro inspection tomorrow. Tutor said I had natural talent which is nice to hear. I’ve never welded material this thick before, this was 8mm and 3mm.

Quite cool, the instructor brought along his Nital etching liquid and after we’d got the cuts to a mirror finish, we could see the shape of our welds.

Then we got to write about everything we did. I’m so cooked after three days of that and there’s more tomorrow…

I got the two broken studs out the plate with heat and visegrips, gradually working the thread back and forth and feeding oil into it as I did it.

Someone I used to work with (and who doesn’t like me) snapped an easy out causing six hours of headache today, so I was extra conscious that I should get this right, just for my own ego!

Then a raid of the whitworth bolt store to find some replacement bolts. I’ll flap disc this, then it’ll probably go tractor blue, we have a lot of that left over!

Someone I used to work with (and who doesn’t like me) snapped an easy out causing six hours of headache today, so I was extra conscious that I should get this right, just for my own ego!

On a through-hole with broken tap, I've had success with an oxy-ace torch, heating it up to burn temp then let rip with the oxy. It burned the tap away entirely, leaving the threads clear enough to take a fresh clean-up tap.
I managed to save a very expensive print roller with that, after their guy broke it.

That’s exactly what I did save the point at which it began to melt, I pulled back, but doused the broken bit in oil which quickly thinned out. Warmed the top, too, to encourage oil penetration!

Interesting. Add to the repertoire of tricks. Thank you!

More bare minimum progress. The two things here, seized fast in the plate, were drilled to relieve the tension on then then the plate heated around the bore. I then punched them to get a bit of movement, but the easy out got them going a bit faster. Two out, no casualties.

Next, flap disc world.

Then idk. Maybe get back to the gearbox, why do I find these distractions?

Really shouldn’t have, but damn! Koken on special, $200 discount on the impact sockets and $100 off the inhex metrics, that’s insane. I’m $350 poorer, my own fault for looking I suppose.

I’m still looking for a good set of spanners, maybe Facom I’m thinking? I’m not anal about building an exclusive brand set of tools, but koken is just so good. I wish they made spanners, too.

As the universe hears I’m trying to get rid of one project, it delivers another.

Free. Walker Turner drilling machine. Came with a nice vice, too. Fix and give to my brother in law who has no drilling machine. Won’t be doing very much to it, just get it going again.

Yeah, usually it means there’s something wrong with it that they can’t fix! In this case, the head is seized to the column. I think I could have a go at removing it.

Freeing the column was the easy bit.

What’s held it in is the column locking clamp, made of mazak or zamak which has rotted an expanded. I’m going to have to remake them out of steel, which won’t be hard to do.

The paint is very poor, so I’ll strip it and repaint. The table is supposed to rotate but is seized with paint, so again, strip and repaint.

An exciting update, part of the shear has been painted! Both these projects are a random diversion from the task in hand, but that’s the direction life has taken so, so be it.

So has the head of the drilling machine. Quite an attractive machine this, even if it is American! It’s big, too. Bigger than the Fobco Star. I’ll see if I can get all the small bits wire-wheeled for the shear tomorrow, then the rest needs sorting.

I truly have MigWeldingForum’ed myself here, going massively off topic and becoming entwined in something unrelated yet somehow also making progress?

Paint scraped off, wire wheeled, red oxide. I left the workshop door open and the rain filled up two boxes of Britool so I’ve just finished wiping all the sockets and accessories dry, tedious.

The new Koken bits came and with two new stickers it was time to add them to my drawers, only two socket sets to go and I’ll have them finished

That’s right, I sold it to my friend Kym a few years ago along with my big Denbigh drill. It’s a great machine and I was considering buying it back but space is my problem.

The older machines are getting tricky to find these days.
