Kim’s machine is an MG2, completely different in almost every way, even the shade of blue is different. Yes, both Ransomes, both horticultural crawlers, that’s it. Drive, engine, track gear all different. The MG6 shares a lot of MG5 components however.
Anyway, the crawler is complete and not in bits which can’t be said for the Howard which seems to be in a million parts. I just need to not forget where everything is.
Clutch lever primed and with all the bolts in, I managed to lose the lock bolt but happily I had one in my box of bits. A few years ago I was invited to watch and participate in the dismantling of a railway gantry crane on a Saturday, so unpaid. I got so much whitworth hardware from that day.
Then, power take-off engagement dog box, cleaned of grease and works again, how odd. Also, this mystery lever which I’m fixing up. It’s got a core of steel in it, that’s obviously meant to move. The other one has seized.
I swear I spent two hours out there tonight and this seems a pitiful amount of work! Maybe tomorrow we’ll see a big ‘jump’.

So that weird assembly that had all the silt in, it’s another clutch. It seems it’s an overload protection or something like that, probably if it hits a rock. Anyway, it needs sorting.
Then, all the springs in Howard land went for a clean and oil, and so did all the wheel studs and nuts. This took forever. Next up, the nuts and captive bolts for the tines.

Had the evening off yesterday, sort of. I cleaned out the threads on the wheel hubs after I degreased them. Heaps of crusty rust. The studs go in nicely now.
I donned my flat cap and went out to see a woman called Jennifer Reid who sings Manchester work songs, ballads, all from the c19. Absolutely wonderful, I would listen to it every night if it were a thing. Look her up on t’internet. They let me bring my own hazy IPAs into the venue, too!

Rare accessory time, rollers are hard to find. The thread was all messed up but wouldn’t press out easily so I heated the bar and bent it. Then the little door on the roller wouldn’t come off so some more 3000°c persuasion got it off. This roller needs blasting.

Continuing… the roller bar got a bit injured when I was fighting the nuts and both ends got badly stripped.
I’m using some BSF threaded rod I took from the Allen Scythe, the really old one. That machine won’t ever run again and it’s good that it should help the cause. Usual lathe job, chopped and bored to an inch and a half deep, then tapped to 1/2 by 16 BSF, loctited in. Maybe I should have drilled and taper pinned to keep it fully authentic.
Then wooo, the bits for the roller came back from my friend who does them for free - free, if I do some favours. Today I was taper reaming a hole that a roll pin kept falling out of, I took him a load of scrap steel too as he collects that and then sells it all. The best kind of charity starts at home.

Massive Britool to the rescue and massive idea to buy another piece of old metal… another project was clearly what this workbench needed, right?
And wow, genuine FJ Edward’s angle iron, you don’t see that every day. Just look at that plaque. That’s the largest spanner Britool made and I found it hanging in a railway workshop, covered in dust, long forgotten. I was allowed to take it home, best day ever!
This shear won’t take too much work to tidy up, and it’ll be fun to use, possibly even useful for a project I have in the garden involving rebar. There’s blue paint on it which I feel is aerosol, in the brass plaque there was flecks of red which I reckon was the real colour. Handy, as I have red in the cupboard.
