Anyone got direct experience of indirect heaters?

I am looking at thw possibility of buying a 34kw 230v oil fired indirect heater for my garage



I have a direct oil fired space heater and it leaves fumes in the garage and the burnt fuel moisture is a problem. So I never use it basically!

I have China diesel heaters too but one struggles to heat my back garage. I would be better off with a powerful heater to get the heat up quickly for the short evening use. I will also be ultimately extending my double garage to a 4 car garage so this size will be required.

Do these type of heaters truly burn clean? Aka in use to all fumes get separated OK and decent heat from them?

With indirect heaters any fumes etc should exit through the exhaust on the top providing there isnt a hole in the heat exchanger.

a waste oil heater is basically the same just that it has an air blower to get the heat spread around the room using ducting

Those don't look good. They would require fairly open spaces to radiate the heat. My garage is very tight and always has cars in it. That also looks like the fumes stay inside, I'm particularly interested in a large KW heater with a proper flue / exhaust to send fumes and water vapour outdoors.

the older versions are easy enough to swap to kero burning instead of old oil

so no smoke emissions or acrid fumes

now ive been in a garage with one of these working and they do the job just fine ive also seen in use the oil burner furnace both designed around the same thing warms a garage up quickly and nice and warm

These things are pretty good not seen that make but our local ag shop has one running as well and it's fairly cosy inside and no fumes or condensation that I could see.

I was impressed, quite, no fumes, apparently one of the local farmers has one in his lounge, runs on red!

They did say it would be ok in a house. The only thing to watch out for was spillages on the carpet when filling. The one I saw was on wheels so could be wheeled to the door. A cheap way of heating though.

My garage is 30sqm ....X2 bathroom heaters is more than sufficient. I have them wall mounted pointing downwards...works well as it directs the flow to ground level.

I used to have gas but that caused huge condensation problems so had to get rid!

I prefer the safety of electric ...I have them on a timer button so they automatically switch off after an hour (got fed up of walking down the garage in my PJs at 1am to check if I'd switched them off!!!!)

Fit the burner/heater outside with a heat exchanger, to blow in only clean hot air. Also means l, if the exhaust has a leak, you wont get poisoned by fumes or CO
I wouldnt want to be handling diesel inside a work space as it stinks, some always gets out.

Can they not be upgraded with a higher flow fuel pump, more powerful intake fan etc...to get more heat? I've not used one.

We use a big one of those in one of our workshops.
Flue ducted through the wall, warm air duct up and toward the middle of the workshop.
Only real smell you get inside is from the oil itself tbh, from the odd little spalsh when refueling.
Warms up a 6/700m2 workshop up fine.
Glad I dont pay for the oil mind, easily burns 50+ litres a day.

My advice is don't just think about exhaust fumes. Any combustion will produce a lot of moisture, and this is a really big issue when it condenses on cold metal parts. That is a massive advantage of having an external exhaust. If you can stand the cost for occasional use and assuming you have a good electrical supply to the garage, I think electric is hands down the best option. Having said that, I just bought one of those 8.5kw diesel heater because I only have a 13 Amp power supply to the garage. My 8.5kw rated heater doesn't warm adequately in my poor insulated garage. I will be interested if a 20kw diesel heater with external exhaust exists?

If you mean a China diesel heater, there is no such thing as 8 or 8.5 kw units. They are all copies of 5kw.

If I were to use an indirect heater I think I would want to have a safety sensor somewhere so can detect if exhaust gasses are getting mixed in with heated air.

Still don't like the general idea unless there's no other choice. When these things are new they work great....it's the age deteriation that I'd worry about I think.

how much fuel does the small diesel heater use ( 4-5kw max )

and how much does the unit cost

say you bought 2 of them instead and doubled your fuel

Part of this thread was about cleaning burning options without needing an external exhaust; that is what I was referring to. There are cleaning burning heaters that don't have an external exhaust; I still would not trust them myself as they still consume oxygen even if they don't give off carbon monoxide; they also produce moisture as part of the combustion process. The cost of rapid electrical heating is subjective. I occasionally run a 15kw electrical space heater at work and find it very affordable.
