Office Diesel Heater Install

For various reasons I've gone this route for my garden office

Same style I had in the Disco, I wanted self contained to make install cheaper

Wrapped the exhaust in 300 degc heat wrap, highest I've seen the burner is 205

Additional bit of wood is due to floor not being finished

Bit of finishing to do on the wall, but it's been on every day this week without issue

Exhaust is at cat height and there is a direct correlation between me having a quiet life and the cat not getting burned

Running on kero, will strip it down once the weather warms up to see how it's doing internally

I'd be semi nervous being that close to wood even with thermo wrap & worth keeping a close eye on it. I have a standalone one like that I rigged up to heat up my inflatable paint booth, and I insulated the exhaust with wrap, then vermicule based stuff for chimney's and then stood it on some spacers under the feet so it had about 80mm of clearance to the plastic stool it was set up on. I kept getting a whiff of plastic & when I moved the stool, it had melted the top despite the insulation wrap on the exhaust.
Good move on the exhaust silencer mesh protection, I set up two box offcuts and put a old bbq mesh to stop the cats burning their paws investigating it the same, but that's because I'm team cat, not to save grief

I'd disagree, all that's going to do is heat up.

The heat shield plus air gap will be more than sufficient

The 2" wide glassfibre heat safety wrap is good stuff. A layer of that & you can rest your hand on a big diesel exhaust straight after the turbo & working hard. Its hot, but not hot enough to burn you (or anything else).

I do fancy one of these for my shed. My get round to it one day

I used that heat protection stuff for diesel heaters that its fiberglass wrap coated with silicone, its really effective! That was to run the exhaust under all the plastic underbody protection under a vw T5

It's not a tight fit so I also created an air gap where it goes through the wall

Your chips are going to kill you now the chip pan basket is screwed to a shed.

As usual, ask your insurer. The installation will be prohibited by them - or your insurance policy may be voided in the event of a claim.

Many people store lawnmowers and strimmers in their garden sheds, along with the fuel cans that go with them, and that's petrol. Do they all inform their insurers? I doubt it. I've got a diesel heater in my workshop - all it takes is a bit of common sense when you install it, and a bit of routine maintenance keeping it clean and clear of sawdust and litter. My exhaust goes out through the wall, encased in a scaffold tube and some GF tape, and it's been like that for three years now with no problem whatsoever.

I think it's a case of seeing a few pictures and instead of "nice install" it's "let's criticize, without any actual facts or real world experience"

The heater was on from about 0730 until 1800 today (even left it on when I went for lunch) and it didn't catch fire

The only thing more dangerous than that is leaving your TV plugged in when the Daily Mail have decreed that the worst lightning storm this week is on its way, or going out when the BBC say its a bit windy.
