I can never decide whether to like or hate you. Just ordered one. For that price, it'd have to be really naff not to be worth its cost, & a handy thing to have around for quick pressing operations.

It is a mechanical press. It is the same shape, size and mechanical arrangement (mechanical advantage) as every other one sold to the same specifications.

Thus, when the same arm force is applied to its operating lever, there would have to be some special area of physics, yet undiscovered by mankind, for it not to produce the same force as others in the same class.

You can argue about build quality and longevity of overseas-made items, but in this case, it is difficult to see how the applied force could be less.

That's limited in purpose. An arbor press, less so.

Its a reasonable amount cheaper than the proper tool for chain breaking and I think it should be more capable.

Unsure if that will work on chainsaw chains, particually if intending to reuse the links - 1/4" pitch links are not available to buy.

1/4" pitch sounds a bit tiddly for anything..
How do you intend to re-use the extracted links ?
Wouldn't fancy a saw-chain going awry at full belt , that's for sure...

Reassemble the links and hit with hammer to swage the pins back out.

1/4" pitch is only used on small saws like my climbing saw Echo 2511, its not that powerful.
For the bigger .325 and 3/8" chains I would normally use new links. However the new .325 link pins I got, that I use for my big saw, are just a bit too long and hammer wont get them down enough, so the last 4 chains I did with reused links. I dont think theres any chance of them coming off.

This post has reminded me to drag out a No3 I got ages ago from MOL which I could have used a fair few times if I remembered I had it!



Need to drill out broken tooling retaining bolt at base of rack which should be straightforward.
Question tho, can you get "sets" of popular press tooling for these? Appreciate fit for No1 is probably smaller than a 3 but my googlefu is failing me as I can't find any. Also appreciate you would need to make thngs specific for other jobs but just wondered on usual job sets?
Also it would *iss @MattF off with more things to buy

I am converting/adapting one of these small presses into a valve spring poundage/height checker, it’s going to be chopped about a bit too much to be any good for anything else but at £50 it’s no hardship.

What's the general quality of the press like @8ob?

Tried it today, cant complain about the quality however I have not used one before so dont have anything to compare with. However I have used industrial hydraulic presses, much simpler. Had to find spacers to get handle in a good position.

For punching out chain links, it could really use an extension handle, I am leaning in it! I cant believe thats 1 ton of force. @8ob if thats a presure gauge in your pic, it would be interesting what it reads at various amounts of effort.

I did notice, compared with club hammer, that when the link lets go, the press has a habit of bending the link, too much force, where a club is only just breaking the link and often another hit to push it free. Perhaps I could add a stop so that it is only pushing a couple millimeters.

I did have to turn down the chinese punch set from 10.6mm to 10mm. They appear to be a decent grade of hard chromed steel, reminds me of 709m40. Ignore the rubbish finish as I left the cutter in while going back

I am guessing my No3 is a generic larger one than the 1, tooling insert aperture on mine is smidge over 1/2" and all the bolts on it are 5/16 UNC.
I've ordered some 1/2" silver steel round bar to make some tooling / punches, and 5/16 retainer bolts. Saying in case there is a bit of a mix of imperial and metric? on the No 1

4 times the weight and roughly 5 times the price for the 3 ton, I think is quite fair. Is the 1 ton not adequate for you?
