Well....

Bend me over and spank me senseless with a big German sausage.

In 90mins I'd drained the one litre of dark brown ATF out of the box, refilled with three litres till it came out the level hole. Removed blocks of wood and jacks, tentatively put it in first, then through all the gears, worked perfect. I'm in a semi state of shock.

Enormous thanks for everyone's advice and comments.

DO NOT USE STANDARD TYPES OF ATF IN THIS. Dextron 2 or 3 will bu**er it up in short order. Maybe the previous owners have done this and is the cause of the problem ?

It used a specific type of fluid. ATF N402

It is most likely an internal solenoid problem hopefully which does not need the gearbox removing, however make it easy by taking the front bumper and crashbar off and possibly the radiator.

Just a thought, check the shifter cable is connected and working.

I'll check exactly what I put in tomorrow. Thanks for that, I wouldn't have thought of that.

Complete replacement new brakes, no disks, and some rubber pipe.

The one litre of brown filth which came out.

Rear window fully functional, all windows good, all lights good, headlights need polishing. A.C. needs recharging, as that's not working, on start, all warning lights come on, and go off, pro body work shop bloke next door will respray bonnet for mates rates....

Yeah, was missing a fair bit of antifreeze, engine oil suggests it needs changing asap, no visual emissions at all from exhaust, engine runs sweet as a nut.

Total costs so far:

Purchase cost: €250
Transport home: €250
3 litres of ATF: TBC, and I'll rinse and replace with the correct, will check tomorrow.

Then next week, all the brakes, God, brakes, easier than changing a clutch though.

Just remembered, check the cubby box in the boot floor, they tend to fill up with water, I drilled a drain hole in mine.

The boot is pretty mouldy.

Advice noted.

Will investigate under the floor, not got that far.

Fingers crossed, I was bloody shocked when it moved, more so it went through all the gears correctly.

I'm not used to rare bargains.

It's a rare thing, maybe I'll buy a lotto ticket tomorrow, that won't work.

if you go for another ATF flush then try empty the converter into the empty sump by just running it for 5 seconds then switch off. Its basically a centrifugal fluid pump.
