In 90mins I'd drained the one litre of dark brown ATF out of the box, refilled with three litres till it came out the level hole. Removed blocks of wood and jacks, tentatively put it in first, then through all the gears, worked perfect. I'm in a semi state of shock.

I'll check exactly what I put in tomorrow. Thanks for that, I wouldn't have thought of that.DO NOT USE STANDARD TYPES OF ATF IN THIS. Dextron 2 or 3 will bu**er it up in short order. Maybe the previous owners have done this and is the cause of the problem ?
It used a specific type of fluid. ATF N402
It is most likely an internal solenoid problem hopefully which does not need the gearbox removing, however make it easy by taking the front bumper and crashbar off and possibly the radiator.
Just a thought, check the shifter cable is connected and working.
