Because the exhaust gases will be drawn into the inlet easier than 'fresh' air, which has further to go and more resistance, so little or no airflow = little or no fuel injected. - quite common on the DW / Puma, we used to make a 'diagnostic' blanking plate from a coke can, if it fired up straight away, quote for an EGR valve + time to get the siezed one out...

I had ruled the EGR out since there were no codes (on my crappy Foxwell), and at some point I disconnected the MAF and tried to start it.

EGR is right around the back of the engine, so I’m quite glad he’s getting someone with a lift to replace it, and not me.

You don't always get codes as the EGR is supposed to be inactive / closed during cranking so DTC's are suppressed until the engine is running (same goes for some other codes) - which obviously won't happen. The way to check diagnostically is check live values for MAF & EGR to see if they are plausible although it's often quicker to blank-off the EGR.

220k miles, 2010. When cold, and climbing a hill, it sometimes goes into limp mode, with lots of grey smoke. Scanned the codes recently and got a P1247 secondary turbo low boost pressure. This time, only a P2264 water in fuel. I think that’s down to a dodgy sensor, but it will, apparently put...
