Yeah unless you're dealing with high value classics it's a difficult industry. A high quality major resto is going to be 1000plus hours plus parts, a mid quality full resto is still going to be 400 plus hours. If paying £30 to £40/hr then the car needs to be worth a lot to make financial sense. I do most of my own work and even then it doesn't make financial sense.
Precisely!! We (some of us) do it for the love of it. A hobby can be financed, a business has to stand on it's own 2 feet financially.

If anybody saw B and C tonight - the normal auction one - there was a Granada estate done out as a rally support vehicle. Sold for £7,250 to a classic car garage, presumably to sell on. Had a quick Google to see what became of it. Sold at a different auction house in May this year for £3,900. Had been on ebay the same month, but can't tell if it sold on there. I'm guessing not. Quite a price drop.

I'm bumping this because OMFG, that Land Rover on tonight's episode.
Series 1, really rough, bought at the auction for £9k. Took nearly 2 years, £25k plus on parts, something like £48k on labour. £85k plus in total. Sold in the end for £40k.

How much of it was the original vehicle ? We watched it as I helped a friend do a similar thing with a series 2a a few years ago, quicker than that though.

Yes, they can afford to take the loss because it comes out of the profits from the tv show. I did think this one in particular one was excessive though. They should have called a halt half way through and just got it presentable. £50k on labour was nuts.
50k in labour. If that was a real paying job, I'd be asking why he's not working on it instead of fannying about. Does the bloke work for HS2 or something!

i watched one of there programs and they did a car up and reckoned it owed them 45 grand. think it sold for about 27 
doing them up for proffit is a looser for a business its a labour of love . most of the cars they sell for folk fetch less than they think its worth . most of the younguns nowadays havent got the gear or the incination or interest to rebuild and own one
