Lots of fun today. This is not just my work, but mine and few MIS people.
Plus a dog.
This rusty tool is stamped up with GPO.
So we set to work.
The leather was washed, saddle soap applied and then leather feed.
Then as we slowly removed some rust and crud, this showed up.
Nice tool for a simple restoration.
No power tools were used.

Well, as it shows in the images above.
This is an Eclipse 45 tool.
That and rust.
Simple Dremel polishing tools had the handle cleaned up.
De rusting the tin, led to a discussion over coffee and Hob Nobs.
I sat and listened, as they all spoke about other de-rusting methods at the sheds, two careers were getting a bit nervous. As it was getting a bit shouty.
I pointed out that there ways they wanted to try all had good points and bad points. Out came the smart phones.
I mixed up, citric acid, flour and white vinegar.
We used that way.
The blades were boiled in Citric acid, cleaned with wire wool and warm wax applied.
The box was washed in Meths. Then 0000 wire wool soaked in bee's wax was used to polish the metal.

We agreed the simple way was to try out different methods, but we needed a tool or something that was covered in equal amount of rust.

Over the counter Rust killer.
Power tools.
Wet n Dry, Scotchbrite and wire wool. This lot was used to finish off.
Not bad.
All done.

Hot caustic had the paint off.
Plus this stove brought back memories.

This was done by a MIS Member who comes to my play pen when he can, with his health issues.
Today was tonic water and hand tools.
No new bits, now power tools, something new to try and something to make him concentrate.
The shaft was removed, sanded and given 5 coats of wood stain.
This was my mix of citric acid, flour and white vinegar. This time applied hot, makes no difference, just is more fun.

Resin filling. We did make a new wedge, on safety grounds.
Black wax applied.
The edge was sorted with this.
Today was tonic water and hand tools.
No new bits, now power tools, something new to try and something to make him concentrate.

Rice cooker placed on top of hot hob...melted foot.
Replacement foot made. Should keep wife happy. She's only "cooked" three rice cookers so far.

When we got out first electric kettle many years ago my Gran filled it & put it on the gas cooker to boil it. Mum arrived just in time before much damage was done but one of the plastic feet had melted. Kettle was used for many years after but always had a rock in it.

The lower one, it was badly pitted.
The brass was protected with filler and or many layers of tape. Then a wire brush was used to attack the rust. Then a blow over with a blow torch.
Then it was "painted" with citric acid powder, flour and white vinegar. When the metal turns black it is washed off under cold water with a brass coated wire brush.
Allowed to dry.
The brass was cleaned with metal cleaner and wire wool.
The wood was sanded with 800 grit Wet and dry. Then polished with 1000 grit and wax.
Then it was warmed with a blow torch until the wax melted smooth.
Then a dark bee's wax was applied with 0000 grit wire wool. Let to dry.
The blade was then coated with Gun Black, left to dry.
The whole lot was given a good going over with bee's wax.
This will be used at the allotments.
