I never adjusted or repaired Strowger, but done jumpering in many, also TXE’s (electronic exchanges) as well. All gone now.

Uni selectors were also used throughout industry ( & still are ? ) in the early days of PAL systems , cut my teeth during my City & Guilds industrial electronic servicing & maintenance training repairing such a PAL set up that used to be running the district heating system at Bretton Peterborough

My friend had an engineering company & the capstans were controlled by Uni selectors, when the Strowger was being phased out I saved a lot of spares destined for the skip. You wouldn’t have thought they would have worked covered in muck & dirt, but they carried on with little or no maintenance until they literally fell apart.

Mountfield mower (nice one, 18" cut rotary, self-propelled) gifted by Little Sister after a few years in her mate's sister's garage (Little Sister's garden's now all astroturf, sheds and a swimming pool for the kids that amuses the dogs), discovered the engine brake has to be pulled in to pull the starter (cable tie, that'll do), no start - carb off and float vlave cleared, orange gunge out of the bowl, throttle cable broken, garden centre shut 5 min ago...

Fed up with walking past this pile of rubble, the tractor goes round OK but it's hard work with the bowser and a car won't go so while the weather is good and I'm in the zone

Out with Titan the unbreakable breaker and apart from a few breaks when the heatwave was a bit wet we got there

If me back works tomorrow I'll get the whacker out

I finally got around to installing the steering gearbox that I rebuilt (see repairs HERE) on our 1953 Ford tractor. It steers SO much better now. It's almost like having power steering compared to how it was before.

Here's the rebuilt gearbox after painting it. The four bolts are just there to keep paint out of the threads while spraying it.

I also did a bit of finish work on the sheet metal that I repaired (see repairs HERE), and then installed it on the tractor.

Here is the "BEFORE" image, showing the crude bodywork done by some previous owner(s):

Here it is after I repaired the worst of the previous bodywork and gave it a quick paint job (and a new emblem):

I've only used it a few hours since putting it back together, and it's already getting scratched up from the branches, briars, and brambles along the edges of the fields. As I mentioned before, I'm not trying to do a full restoration; I just want a decent-looking working machine.

I'm considering doing some engine overhaul work on it over the winter. It's still running pretty well, but the mill is getting a little long in the tooth.

Looks good do people get confused by the amber direction indicator lenses ?

Amber indicators . . . but the flashing ones on the roof seemed to upset the teenager in the M3 coming the other way . . .

The joys of rust killing.

This nice, old, complete, rusty and not moving chain hoist was mine the other week.

I knew it needed a lot of TLC, abuse, love and beer.

Nothing moved.

So it had a bath.

A week later i was ready to see if the Citric acid had worked.


Hmmmmmm.
No.

Even the spilt pins were rusted welded into place.
Each one had to be ground off and drilled out..

Heat, oil and a 10 ton puller was used.

4 hours to get the lifting pulley into it's parts.
The sockets are dead ones that I used to push the pin when the puller did not fit.

But the puller and heat was used. 2 pints of paraffin was used. My OE kit was used to locayl heat parts. But that torch is great to pump heat into the are over a longer time.

The pin was forced to move, the lead sealing the oil holes was soon melted out.
When it moved one way, we pushed it back, then back the other way. As more of the pin was exposed we cleaned it up.

The sad bit was we found this old repair(Bodge).

A friend tiged the repair up, on the inside of the pulley wheel, this was left as a historical repair.


The lot was then placed back in the citric acid for 2 weeks.

Under the crud the metal was good.
That white stuff was a pain.

Even hints of paint were found.

The chain was still seized into the shape of the pulley, as well coated in white crud.

So, I solved that with a simple application of heat.

Kills rust a treat.

Bit of paint.

Bit of bling.

We have a working hoist.
The chain has since been lubricated with:
Lamp Black.
Linseed Oil
Bee's wax.

i got one the same size given as the green one. you can lift a brigeport miller up using a finger and thumb to lift it

Well a week off work then straight into a first (for me anyway!).

Extracting a snake from an FZ6..

It didn't want to come out, was nice and gentle with it and we manged to coax it out eventually.

Every day is a learning day!.
