How do you guys keep your welds so straight and neat??
Do you use some kind of guide?

Corner welds have no option but to be straight really, but to be consistent you need to be comfortable first. This is the hardest bit about how I work. Its nearly always awkward.

It's important to be comfortable for sure, I often clamp a piece of box or tube in place to rest against as 90% of my welding isn't on the bench

I have noticed how much of a difference cleaning with acetone makes. Even down to wiping the filler rod.

i wish i could tig weld like you guys.just started trying stainless today and hmmmm not so good.
one peice of stainless just trying to lay the filler rod and it looked like i hadnt been there.
nice to see people that can do it properly.keep trying i surpose!!!

Not my welds unfortunatly, but these things are some of the best and most consistant ive ever seen.

whats the trick for getting the welds to look like that people ? every stainless thing ive done has gone a gray colour except for about an inch when i was having a practice once but cant think of any thing differnt that i could be doing ?

cheers rick il give more gas a crack altho i do think ive done it before but doing it purposefully to check wont hurt

You need a "gas lense", search it on good, i think weldquip on here will be able to help you out.
I'll put some pictures up tomorrow of some recent stuff.

"You need more gas coverage, the gray colour is because the weld was still hot when the gas was removed from it."
A lot of it is down to heat input as well, look at the thickness of the material being welded, it's fairly hefty. Be careful not to turn gas up too high as you may cause more problems than you solve.
Gas type is also a contributing factor, if you're welding austenitic stainless an argon/hydrogen gas and for all other materials argon/helium mixes will give generally you far "cleaner" welds
Argon/Hydrogen? Was that a typo
It can be used, generally in automated process on thin metal as it will speed up operation but adds the risk of brittle weld and porosity. Helium/argon will give a hotter arc and can be useful on ali when you can't get enough oomph out of your set. As for cleaner? Wouldn't have said so...both just give you a hotter and more direct arc for your amps.
