A vast amount of my depression towards work comes from poor standards. I feel completely helpless knowing I cant finspeople good enough to give work to. Which also limit's business growing potential.

It is a sad state of affairs . It seems most just have a that'll do attitude or that's near enough . It does tend to grind you at times but there's always the flip side when the customer want's cheap cheap cheap you just can't win .

My problem is my fathers family were painting contractors, and my father worked for them after leaving the sea, but before buying. TV business, so I was taught how to do it properly and what good should look like. None of the three Ive used recently came anywhere near.

I don't know if this is the correct process but the one we had sanded the walls, went round with filler then sanded again, mist coated to show up any imperfections followed by more filler and sanding, finally a couple of coats of paint, we're very pleased with the finish.

What annoyed me with the last one, hed served his time with the old family buisness. Knew what should be done. But still wanted to rush and skip stages….using the line most folk dont want to pay for the extra time it takes. If hed done what I wanted, he would have got the rest of the house to do, as it is he got one room!

Another who does a lot of work in our local hotel, came to view our holiday cottages for a full paint mid December or January. Wouldn't agree to a set date 8 months in advance for 3 weeks work. Maybe when I said I wanted a proper job, he was put off.

It's not just painters or decorators though it's across a lot of trades , and also adding to the problem is there is thousands out there that aren't even tradesmen but tout themselves as such .

I know a few of those. One in particular, scary just how bad his work is, but he seems to get work.

This unfortunately isn't true.

There are loads of time served guys producing dog **** work because they get away with it.
Ive worked with plenty, well paying jobs being bodged.

Good Morals make a good tradesmen.

Customers don't help I agree
You give a good quote that you explain is higher than the others but that is the final price, you've already considered what horrors you will uncover.
The other guys, cheap as chips until the invoices for extras come in.

I've seen (and personally know) plenty of perfectly capable tradespeople who could put out excellent workmanship except that they can't be arsed to whilst they are getting away with not. Most of them think that work is something that is done between mesing with their phone and standing around talking. Personally my self-esteem wouldn't allow it but an increasing majority of folks think that's a 'weird' attitude.

Pretty soon the only place you're gonna find any decent working folk is in the local cemetary.

At the end of the day a s***e job is a s***e job all I meant was there;s a lot out there passing themselves off as some thing there not ,
I've worked with many people over the years that have no one trade as such or are time served , they have however taken the time to learn stuff and probably more importantly have a bit of pride in a good job done , same as a good reputation is only as good as the last job you did .

The "I need a bathroom tiling by the end of the week" type posts on FB don't help, there's always some chancer take the job, we had to wait 3 months for a builder to start and he was telling me he's fully booked to October, the high standard of his work was worth the wait though.

About time I did some more work on my lockup, so this weekend I've been messing about with a digger, made a trench and filled it with concrete




Also levelled out the ground to the rear, well its sort of level, my digger skills are very rusty, not helped by the ground being full of bricks and other building waste that people have dumped there over the years

And started clearing out the other side, again much bricks and building crap has been dumped there too. Can't get all the way in as the digger is too big so on a cooler day I'll get in there and hand ball it out

New roof on. Just a bit of slaters lath for the edges and a coat of tarry toot and it's done. Then the purge begins need shot of a ton of stuff.

The drawers of the painting toolbox got two coats of this.

Then I put the handles on, not much more I can do until the paint arrives
