The Variator has often been an issue with the Chipmaster, and can be a very expensive fix. There was a fixed speed model available, but they are as rare as finding a Polar Bear in the Desert.

I can't even find a picture of a fixed speed chipmaster.
This one definitely has had it removed I believe because I can see the square hole where the dial sat.

I don’t know why lots of people are slagging Myford off because if like me they only have a small workshop 6’ X 6’ then you have to fit in what you can get in , I only restore antique clocks so the ML10 is plenty big enough for me , and yes I know I have only just started using it after upgrading from a Pultra , I would have liked to be able to keep the Pultra but just don’t have the room, also yes for a lot of people only being able to fit 1/2” through spindle is a bit restrictive but not everyone wants to be able to fit 1” plus through and yes accessories are or can be expensive but they are ( available ) that can’t be said for a lot of lathes out there, and if you look and are prepared to wait they don’t have to be , for example I have only had my Myford ML10 for a month I have managed to find almost everything I need for example I purchased a swivel vertical slide for £70 they usually go for 3 times that.
when I retired I was hoping to be able to carry on offering gas welding aluminium as I am the only person near me able to do it and I used to do it for lots of companies and private people but I just don’t have the space to keep the O&A kit so it had to go, the only thing now that I have to supplement my pension is antique clocks, and I am happy with the Myford for what I do.

i have a new one that cost 800 quid and bought a second hand one complete with stand 4 jaw chuck clutch and fixed center for 100 quid bought a couple of headstock gears and new belts for for it 120 quid so for 220 quid its a gudun

Not if you don't have the space.
I got rid of my 5" lathes, as I'd never have been able to get one into the workshop.

True enough, I thought my Holbrook C13 would always be big enough, but there's an H20 on EvilBay...
Luckily, the Holbrook (needing a clean, paint and a few bearings* replaced) cost less than a Chinese minilathe, let alone a Myford. Needing 3-phase was a bit of a burglar, but I learned how to hack VFDs pretty quickly, then discovered DIY rotary phase converters...

*Thereby hangs a tale - (1985/1986 - 1922B taper rollers, obsolete and Imperial with flanged outer races, for the QCGB, - "yes sir, we can make them for you, £550 each, minimum order 500" - amazing what a Horn grooving tool can do, lovely glowing ribbons of once-hardened steel, slip in a circlip - that'll do, pig.

I may have paid over the odds for my ML10 but £1100 but it looks to have been hardly used and very clean and then again it came with a 100mm Pratt grip true chuck ( £720 from Rotagrip) a Pratt four jaw , another three jaw Pratt , 13/16” and 1” tailstock die holders faceplate, angle plate, set of change wheels, drill chuck, and as I added three phase and vdf, I have sold the original motor, genuine 7 cover to big for 10 and a QCTP that was to big for my 10 for a total of £180 so the lathe actually cost me £920, I have checked how true it is by turning down the middle of a length of 1” mild steel then using auto feed put a cut near the head and tail 6” from head and the measurements were 24.575 at the headstock and 24.579 at the other end so a difference of 0.004mm is not worth worrying about I think also as the picture shows the head to tail alignment is good as well, and have since purchased swivel vertical slide, both fixed & travelling steadies, genuine Myford to ER 25 collet chuck, a set of collets and rear tool post plus some other bits and bobs.

About ten years ago I bought a little Viceroy TDS that had been in a hospital maintenance workshop. Not overused except that the main traverse handle was broken. Does everything that I want it to do, except for big stuff, because lets not forget, whatever machine you have, you could always do with something bigger at times.
Only thing is, I took the cross slide off, to try something a couple of years ago, but I have lost the gib key. Cant find one anywhere.
Five years ago we got a Colchester Mascot. Paid £350 for it. Only problem was moving it, which was why not many were interested.
