Small lathe.

My pal has a Myford, I tried to talk him out of it years ago but he persevered, big bore head conversion the works. He has made some incredible stuff with it but then he bought a CNC lathe, he never touches it now as the new machine is so much more capable. He should sell it as the Model Engineering lot would go ga ga over it.

Myfords do produce some great stuff if the user is skilled, but there just too small, Ive owned one too. But if you want small, from a 3 pin plug, that will hold its price.

For a smallish machine, little bigger than a myford on a stand take-a look at a Boxford AUD. Make sure its the AUD, not the lesser variants.

Size isn't everything, you know.

The smaller stuff is popular for good reason. There are occasions when I find the spindle bore on my Drummond limiting, but it's a rarity, & not the end of the world.

More important is size, weight etc. If I needed to move the machine, I can do so unaided. It also doesn't occupy a stupid amount of space.

I had bigger machines, but let them go, because I truly didn't have the space to ever reinstate any of them.

Most of us tend to work with/around both/either the space we have & what we have.

@MattF I agree totally. I got a Chester conquest, purely because it fitted in the space I had for it. I know it's limitations and work to them. Like the OP I hadn't turned since I was at school. The lathe suits me.

I bought my son a Chester DB7 because thats what I could afford at the time and I have used it and turned out some incredibly accurate stuff.

Also the Colchester Bantam, small but very capable.

I've a Boxford I bought on here a while ago that needs a new home.
Its not the only lathe I own, but because of lack of space it's the only lathe I can use.

It works fine, has the screw cutting gearbox, powered cross feed and more than enough tooling to get you going - 3 jaw, 4 jaw, travelling steady, face plate, quick change toolpost etc.
The bed isn't bad either since I changed it out for a better one.

i have one . bought it new over 45 years ago well used but still in mint condition i wouldnt part with it also have a harrison. if im making small parts it dont get used because there cumbersome both have there good points . as for making bigger stuff i machined these 6 inch wheels on the myford and drilled and bored them out of solid bar for the bearings

I'll do that, I think because I'm so green I'm not going to get great results anyway until I learn a bit.... I hand a half decent machine, a good Turner could make a bad lathe produce decent result but I don't think I could.

Your nearest technical college May have evening classes where you can learn some basics. Not to mention practice on their materials and tooling.

Hi fellas,
I appreciate all the replied, I actually have a plan in motion to purchase a myford ml7 in England, nothing set in stone yet but it has a 3phase motor running a vfd an milling slide attachment, 3jaw, 4 jaw chucks and a few other bits.

I've been doing a bit of research on them and it wasn't promising, now these replies have just confirmed it

Half the issue is I'm so green when it comes to lathes, I thought myford was a good lathe
I don't want anything to big, about 5ft total length 3phase preferably so I can fit a vfd,
A few brand and models to look for would be great

Myford are fine, they do what you want, on a small scale, but they are way overpriced.
Save yourself a few hundred quid you can then spend on a better spec/vfd/toolpost/beer...

I get what your saying, I thought I was getting a good deal for £1000 it even comes with the old 240v motor, can't see me getting a better lathe for less to be honest
