Small lathe.

Hi,
I live in Northern Ireland and I'm looking for a small lathe, Is there anyone able to help me out?
I can not find a lathe anywhere here! My only option new is a warco wm240 at £2300 delivered, which is far to dear for what it is and no tooling.

Welcome to the forum, Joe. Be cheaper to buy a suitable [2nd-user] machine [for your needs] on the mainland, hire a van and collect it yourself?

My company offers pallet shipping to Northern Ireland. Lathes aren't ideal on pallets but up to say a Harrison m250 or Boxford will be ok if palletised correctly.
Will widen your field a little perhaps.
Plenty of bargains on Ebay at the moment. Just remember the seller will need to be prepared to palletise for you. Most do if asked nicely.

you do know that you can make one out of angle iron and flat plate

its strong has many options

Slim_boy_fat driving over might be the easiest way prices on the mainland are fantastic some cracking little lathes forsale indeed.

I have saved that for printing and I know before I start, a good read.

the main issue i found was with was making something straight whilst being homemade only way to do that is make a metal planer up

also look here for other homemade stuff

no matter where you start on building a machine its all built via straight material that means a shaper or a milling machine put a welder near anyof the build and it will distort you stated you have good access to metal steel beams is my reference is a good place to start a planer can be made...

Speedshift.
Lathes up to Colchester Student are ok. We have shipped a Triumph short bed but it is risky. Hiring a van is better IF you can load it. A plant trailer is better still.

Patience is key to finding a lathe. Have transport sorted in advance. Theres a good selection on face ache market place. A ferry ride is well worth it for the right thing.

There is a Warco group on Facebook. It may be worth your while to haunt that for a bit, as lathes do pop up for sale there.

I think I'm leaning toward the seig sc4 if I go new.... I've heard very good reports from them and arc euro trade.
I'm sceptical about buying use with the price of parts for myford and the other top brands.
The sc4 is plenty big for me starting off ( bare in mind I've never touched a lathe before never mind used one ) and has 1100w hi torque motor and power feed on both axis's.

I don't really gave anything specific in mind to make, all I know is I want to learn and turn steel.

Arc Eurotrade are very nice to deal wirh. Have a look at Clickspring on YouTube. He uses a similar lathe I think. And his work is truly outstanding.

I'll do that, I think because I'm so green I'm not going to get great results anyway until I learn a bit.... I hand a half decent machine, a good Turner could make a bad lathe produce decent result but I don't think I could.

Myford a top brand? They’re rubbish hobby lathes that are good for model engineering and hobby stuff. They are priced way above their value because they are small and spares are cheap. I would look for a Colchester or Harrison, or anything about the size of a student - you will get more for your money. Wait and watch, one will come along.

FINALLY, someone has said it. I too cannot believe the almost mystical reputation of such a crap machine. They are simply quite awful and way, way overpriced. Crippled for capacity too with a spindle through bore the "smallest in class" winner.

^^^^ Having owned one I have to agree with Northwest, as said crippled for capacity with the tiny spindle bore. And you can see them flexing if you try & take a moderate cut! People always seem to want spares availability too, You will need this on chinese lathes & myfords. Anything thats built well should never need anything!
For the price of a Myford & only a few inches longer you can have your pick of any number of high quality machines.
