I don’t have a lathe to have fettled, but I really hope you get this over the line, Clive. A rare machine offering a niche operation deserves to be saved.

Can you "subdivide" part of it and wink wink nudge nudge rent that part to someone else? You can qualify for small business rates relief then.
I wish I had done that. My warehouse is just over the threshold. All the units by mine got £25k covid grants - we got nothing

The travelling column machine was the last one in the uk that had the capacity to grind wide beds . Two day removal policy insured it went to scrap. I now know the landlord didn’t inforce this
Nearest place for machine widths over 1250mm is Poland

Assuming all goes well and it makes the trip on the 9th, that may actually turn out to have been a blessing in disguise - possibly put off a lot of potential bidders?
Adding a unique machining capability like that has got to be a good opportunity.

I thought it was 3000 grinding length

I've pointed this out before - that's a good plan for a semi hobby, since you might get 20 or 30 punters a year, but a crap business plan for making money.
Ideally you get someone you trust to do the scraping if you hate it that much.
Ultimately a lot of privateers and small businesses will want to chuck you the machine and it come back ready to reassemble and do some work. Not have to faff on with scraping in.

OEM work and specialised machines is where the money is. Not hobby lathes. In my opinion.

Machine bases would be a gravy job.

Lathes are two a penny and already well catered for by blue diamond etc.

Maybe more valuable machines like VTLs, cylindrical grinders, the money might be there.

No vtl go for export unless late then linear bearings
Cylindrical grinders don’t fit . Shame because the scrapped machine could and slideway services open side Churchill could
Could grind tables and scrape to base
Actually the demographics are smaller machines , Brian caddy at slideway services was busy on small stuff , his cup wheel grinder was 7’
I’ve already got work booked for a year or two ahead and been approached by a few specialists about doing their grinding work
Brian at Bluediamond has work for me as well
I’ve got connections from the family being in the game for 92 years this year
The scraping class thing was for fun as I like it
