chings im needing an update of this!!

we have accidentally run the old digger out of electricity in the middle of the farm track before,
they sat on the bonnet of their car for hours before finally coming to the house they drove by on the way down the road to ask about moving the digger,
i said the battery is on charge, come back later...

The best car I had for the snow was £200's worth of Vauxhall Carlton estate, RWD and auto box. It was great fun.

My MR2 was great fun in the snow....I used to commute across london in it back in the day. Slightest tap of the accelerator and the rear end would be all over the place...no need for steering . Having the engine in the rear over the wheels did help a lot too I guess.

I've had a couple colleagues who couldn't even get off their driveway in BMWs in the snow.

We've had issues in the past with Mrs B's company BMW - now we don't bother even trying - just take the XC70 or the Discovery (Both n all weather tyres)- but it ruins all the fun as there seems to be so little 'skill' in keeping up the driving traction.

I learnt to drive in a Mk1, it was my mums, she worked nights so Id take it out for a spin. She knew what I was doing, late 70s more snow than you wanted, I was 12 and living on the edge of an old WWII Airfeild there was miles of concrete to mess about on. Oh happy days

Heavy snow fall, major travel issues, A21 trunk road that we are on is blocked both ways. Poor travellers having issues:

First set pull in the farm yard, knock on the door and we end up feeding them supper and they are now in our snug by the log burner - no issues. They are probably going to have to stay over night.

Second set - barge straight into our yard, park their car and march out to the road passing our house without a word and certainly not asking if it's OK.

I've coned their car off, and firmly shut the gate and will await developements, but I think it's a blooming cheek !

I was stuck for 4 hours on a hill on the A21 last night! Not anywhere near you though @awemawson - I was near Tonbridge.

Hill was about 2 miles long and all it took was a couple of idiots at the top to get 'stuck' and cause a tailback of maybe 70 or 80 cars. Snow continued to fall quite heavily for an hour or so and then we were all screwed. Ended up spending a few hours pushing and shoving, and helping a guy in his old Landrover pull them all to the top of the hill. So a journey that we normally do in about 50 minutes took us nearly 7 hours!
Probably my own fault though - we took Mrs Miller's Merc instead of my old L200. Next time, we take the truck!

That's the problem though isn't it. I have 4WD cars as that way I can be fairly sure of getting on to the main road, and when I get there, it's a bit safer (IMHO).

I can travel safely allowing for the conditions, but then someone gets stuck in the 'snow' traffice due to loss of traction...

If I could get to them, I could help them, but if I'm stuck behind 20 cars... I'm stuck like the next guy.

I got stuck in a queue of traffic in the snow in 2019. I was in my 110. It was on the A30 north of Dartmoor near Okehampton. I thought I had had it at that point but its amazing how far you can travel on that bit of ground between the outer lane and the centre barrier. Did about a mile and a half like that to find a lot of jackknifed lorries at the top of the hill.

To be honest it wasn't that bad. Probably not the way I'd choose to spend my evening, but it was warm in the car, nobody died, and we all got home safely in the end. The kiddies (6&8) had a bit of an adventure, and I quite enjoyed helping out some couples with very young children and some elderly folks. To be quite truthful, I'm very grateful that at 62 I'm still healthy and fit enough to do these daft things! Yeah it was hard work and quite cold, but I got a bit of a buzz from the whole thing! Deffo using my truck next time though - i'd much sooner tow them up the hill rather than push them!

I've just spent an hour extracating a friend of the wifes from our farm yard. Too heavy foot on the pedal, wheels spinning all over the place. Started mandraulically with a shovel clearing the snow - would get 10 foot then spinning again.

Decided that even if I got her to the entrance to the farm at the A21 she'd not be able to get out safely by taking a run and me pushing.

Eventually dug out the JCB 803 from the tractor shed, but the digger was hiding behind the Ford 4000 tractor that is a b@@@@@ to start in the cold. Scraped a path clear much hindered by her darting in front of the bucket 'helping' with a shovel. Told her to get back in the car before she got side swiped by the boom (dark by then and using flood lights.

Now I'm knackered !

A Canadian mate of mine said he loves winter, he gains an extra hundred horses and can do powerslides and doughnuts whenever he likes. I watched him park at my place once, 7.5 ton service truck. He came up the road, did a u turn and dropped it into a space outside my place that had less than a foot spare at both ends and he didn't bat an eyelid! On the other hand, I was amazed!

Fit a thermostart to your 4000 the inlet manifold should have a port for one. 30 seconds of heat and it will fly into life.

Used to ride the bike (motor) to work through the snow, best was an A65, stick it in second or third and nice low CofG. 4" of snow was no problem just keep plodding on around the obstacles.
CG125 was next best, used to follow the ruts if not careful but if I ever got stuck it was easy to pick up and move on.

ACF50 has been applied to the XT in case we get a nice day or two.
