A couple that I knew sang a duet on their message, their own version of “hello this is Joanie I’m sorry but I’m not home” they used to get loads of calls when they were out during the day, just to listen to the message. To be fair it was brilliant

Best one I heard was the message was of a guy saying "hello" followed his kids doing a WW2 impression and the guy shouting " shut up I'm on the phone " the noise got worse and another " shut up" more noise another "shut up" more noise followed by the guy saying "i can't hear a word you had better leave a message.

I once had, as an answerphone message, my impersonation of Zippy from Rainbow. As I recall it included a bit about George, 'a gay pink hippo with a speech defect'.
Went for a job interview. We'll call you on Friday, they said.
Waited in all day Friday, phone never rang. Gave up in disgust about 4.30PM and went shopping.
Came back to find the answerphone flashing.
But no message on the tape, just a click.
Guess they weren't fans of Rainbow.
