when folk say do this do that and get so many other ways to go then somebody says different its not easy when you have little idea on it. good to have many ideas from folk but all need to be looked at the best way to go for me.

I’m getting a TS light vertical in the next few weeks, fitted with single phase motor and starter. I’d like to run a 3ph with inverter so there may be a chance of swapsies, if you’re interested.

whats the reason for you going 3 phase kida. better to run off inverter for speed control ?

i am still waiting on a price for the Traswave to run my 3 phase. but i will later get a small VFD for the mill as its a small motor. Although if the Transwave ends up being daft money ill be getting the VFD sonner. cheers though for the offer kida

No probs. Not a proper machine unless it’s three phase

3ph is smoother than 1ph. You can also adjust speed while keeping the Torque. Subject to the VFD allowing this

What other advantages could we list? Please add to this list:

Speed can be increased over that provided by mains frequency.
Soft starting (ramp up the speed), so less likely to trip a breaker.
No issues with multiple stop-start or forward-reverse cycles.
Electronic braking, so can slow down faster than just coasting to a stop
Control circuit of VFD is all low voltage, so easier, safer and more versatile.

Only reason I can think of now not to go vfd is if your machine has a two speed motor.

Energy wastage - when motor is not running - is much lower (especially compared with a rotary converter).
Emergency stops are all low voltage circuits.

Better surface finish: I had a Colchester Student which came with its original 3-phase but had had a single-phase motor fitted.
I kept getting a strange patterning on turned parts; tried all sorts to correct it but it only stopped when I put the 3-phase motor back on.

Torque pulsation, I expect. The only real advantage of a single phase motor, is that you can use it on single phase.

The motor has this wiring coming out the switch. 3 in the motor.

Have my VFD to wite up. Blue goes in W1 Brown to V1 and both the Black go to U1 ?

Did not know you can run an inverter on a 3 phase motor that just has 415V windings i thought it had to be 220V/380V 3 phase windings in it

Yes you can. You run it at lower speed but with constant voltage. Sure you get reduced output, so it can cause the motor to lose synch, but it depends how much metal you want to cut. My Fritz werner has cut a lot of metal that way, as does the Richmond horizontal.
Its not perfect, but for hobby use it works.

Well by time I got replies. I tripple checked and against my other VFD which is to a star motor though.

Works a treat.

Power will be down to about 58%. I run my mill with a 2HP star wound 415V motor. I expect it provides about 1.2HP. Motor speed is proportional to the frequency, so it would run at the same speed (~1425rpm for my 4 pole motor). Think here: dual voltage motors do not change speed when supplied with a different voltage - the speed is on the rating plate!

what can i expect to cut to in depth/cut on a TS.and with this spec towards a better/stanmdard setup? should i wire it up to get more power then if i need to. And how ?
